A komáromi Monostori erőd a 19. század legfejlettebb haditechnikai elveinek felhasználásával több mint két évtizeden át épült, az építkezésen több ezer ember dolgozott. Ennek ellenére soha nem derült ki, hogy a monumentális erődítmény éles helyzetben mire is képes; az erődöt ugyanis soha nem támadták meg.

A Komáromot körülölelő erődrendszer egyes elemei már a 16. században is álltak, de igazi kiépülésükre a 19. század legelején, a Napóleoni háborúk során került sor. 1809-ben, amikor Napóleon seregei elfoglalták Bécset, I. Ferenc császár Komáromba menekült. A nagy ijedségben a császár elhatározta, hogy a birodalom legerősebb erődrendszerét fogja megépíteni, ahol – szükség esetén – akár kétszázezer katona is állomásozhat.

Az erődrendszer legnagyobb vállalása a monostori erőd volt, melynek megépítése 21 évig tartott; az építkezésben 1800 kőműves és 10000 segédmunkás vett részt. Közép-Európa legnagyobb újkori erődjének méretei tényleg lenyűgözőek. Területe 25 hektárt foglal el, 640 helyiség van benne. Volt, hogy egyszerre nyolcezer katona is állomásozott itt.

Az építmény kőfalaiból meglehetősen kevés látszik, mert a föld alá süllyesztett épületek tetejét 2-3 méter vastag földréteggel fedték be, ezzel is csökkentve a lehetséges támadási felületeket.

A Monostori erődöt a legjobban védhető, legbékésebb erődnek is nevezhetnénk, mert élesben soha nem került kipróbálásra. A haditechnika rohamos fejlődése a 19. század végére elavulttá tette az akkori erődöket, szükségessé vált azok korszerűsítése; Komáromban azonban erre már nem került sor. A falak között főleg kiképzés zajlott: néha egyszerre több ezer katona gyakorlatozott benne. A lőoktató teremben a falakra festve még most is látható az egykori tananyag.

A II. világháború után a Monostori erődben a szovjetek Közép-Európa legnagyobb titkos lőszerraktárát alakították ki, mely a NATO legveszélyesebb kelet-európai objektumokat tartalmazó listáján az ötödik volt.

A komplexumot vezetéssel lehet megtekinteni. A hatalmas területen, a több kilométer hosszú kazamatarendszerben könnyen eltévedhetne az ember. A túra során be lehet járni az egész erődöt, fel lehet menni a Duna-bástya tetejére, lehet bolyongani a három kilométeres kazamata-labirintusban, és egy remek kisfilmet is meg lehet nézni a múlt töredékeiből.

  • Autóbusszal érkezve a Koppánymonostori elágazás vagy a Komárom, Eszperantó út nevű megállóban is leszállhatunk.
  • Komárom helyijáratos buszai megállnak a Monostori erőd bejárata előtt. 
  • A vonattal Komárom vasútállomásig utazzunk!

  • A Koppánymonostori elágazás megállóból északkeleti irányba induljunk a főút mellett a járdán! 300 méter múlva az út bal oldalán láthatjuk az erőd bejáratát. 
  • Az Eszperantó úti megállóból északnyugat felé induljunk a főút mellett. 500 méter múlva jobb oldalon látjuk a nagy parkolót a bejárattal. 
  • A vasútállomásról nyugati irányba induljunk végig a Gyár utcán, majd térjünk jobbra az 1-es főút mentén (1,1 km).
