A mintegy 635 m magas Gerecse hegy délkeletre, Héreg településre néző oldalát idős fákból álló sziklaerdő borítja. A meredek terepviszonyok szinte lehetetlenné teszik az erdőgazdálkodást – az erdő azonban mégsincs biztonságban, a vadállomány fogai és patái alatt az újulat tengődik, a talaj pedig gyors ütemben pusztul.

Az egyetlen terjedelmes, csaknem 30 hektáros öreg erdőrészlet a Gerecse-oldal középső részét foglalja el, meredekségére jellemző, hogy a 400-as és az 500-as szintvonal is áthúzódik rajta. Az adattár szerint 160 évesnél idősebb fákból álló elegyes gyertyános-kocsánytalan tölgyes borítja. Része ugyan a Natura 2000 hálózatnak, de nem védett. Elsődlegesen talajvédelmi rendeltetésű, benne rendszeres faanyagtermelés nem zajlik.

Az idős erdő légvonalban alig két kilométernyire fekszik a másik oldal még öregebb a Bánya-hegy melletti állományától. A Gerecse 50 teljesítménytúrának is részét képező K jelzésű út alatt, azzal párhuzamosan futó ösvényen idős, néha különlegesen csavarodó, támasztógyökerekkel egyensúlyozó, szabálytalan formájú tölgyekkel, kőrissekkel jellemezhető, holtfában gazdag erdőrészlet található.

A Korzikáról betelepített muflonok sehol nem kímélik az erdőket, és túlszaporodva egyre nagyobb károkat okoznak országszerte. A jelenség itt is tetten érhető.

A Tardos, süttői elágazástól a Z jelzést kell követni kelet felé, a Nagy-Gerecse irányába. A jelzés az öreg erdőbe vezet (2,2 km, 119 m szintemelkedés).
Héregről a P jelzést kövessük fölfelé az utcán, majd a balra leágazó Z jelzést, ami már a Szentélyerdőbe vezet (1,9 km, 114 m szintemelkedés).

Parking

Tardoson a Bányahegyi út végén, az erdőben találunk parkolót.
Héregen a temetőnél érdemes parkolni.
