A szív alakú sírkövekről ismert temető története a 18. századig nyúlik vissza. Az 1700-as években, a török időket követően kezdett növekedni a reformátusok száma a faluban, akik kezdetben a falu régi, 13. századi, romos templomát, és a hozzá tartozó régi temetőt kezdték használni. 1790-re megépült azonban új templomuk, és ezzel párhuzamosan a temetőnek is új helyet jelöltek ki, ekkor kezdett kialakulni a mai sírkert.
A szív alakú sírkövek kicsit később, az 1800-es évek elején kezdtek feltünedezni, és egyre inkább elterjedtek, ma is legalább öttucatnyit lehet megszámolni belőlük. Eredetük azonban homályba vész, a helybéliek között legalább három verzió él arról, ki és miért kezdett szív alakú sírkövek faragásába. “Volt Balatonudvariban valaha egy szegény ember, valami furcsa ember, találékony elme, olyan falusi ezermester. Kitalálta, hogy a sírköveket szív alakúra kell faragni. Legyen lába, amelyet elültessenek a sírban nyugvó fejéhez, de ami kimarad a földből, olyan legyen az, mint az ember szíve. Arra jöjjön rá az írás. Ez illik a holtakhoz is, az élőkhöz is.” – írta Eötvös József A balatoni út vége című munkájában.
„Az udvari halászgazdának volt egy igen szép lánya, aki sokszor elkísérte édesapját a Balatonra halászni. A bátor leány egyszer egyedül is beevezett a vízre. A Bakony felől hirtelen jött meg a vihar és a leány nem tudott kievezni a partra a zivatar elől. A vihar felborította a csónakját és a leány Balatonba fulladt. A falu népe sajnálta a leányt, de a szeretője, egy kőműveslegény különösen. A legény elhatározta, hogy szív alakú sírkövet készít kedvese sírjára. Az udvariaknak nagyon megtetszett a szív alakú sírkő és halottjaik számára ők is készítettek hasonlót. Amíg a kőműves élt, sok ilyen sírkövet faragott, amivel benépesítette az udvari temetőt.” – szól a másik monda.
A mondáknál kicsit profánabb magyarázat szerint a kőfaragásban és helyesírásban járatlan helyi kőfaragók készíthették ezeket a különleges alakú sírköveket. Eredettől függetlenül erre az igazán különleges kultúrtörténeti emlékre érdemes szánni egy kis időt például egy balatoni nyaralás során, vagy a 71-es úton autózva, esetleg egy bringatúra részeként.

- A helyközi buszok Balatonudvari, autóbusz-váróterem megállóhelyéről indulj a 71-es főút mellett kelet (Balatonfüred) irányába, kb. 200 méter kell sétálni a temetőig.
