A Balaton-felvidéki Pécsely közeléből induló patak, az Örvényesi-séd régen malmot hajtott, mielőtt a Balatonba ömlött. A sűrűn beépített part közelében semmi nem utal arra, hogy a falu határából a Camino Benedictus zarándokút tölgymatuzsálemek erdőjébe visz, amelynek közepén sziklás, szurdokszerű völgy mélyén kanyarog a vízfolyás.
A helyben élők által „őstölgyesként” is hivatkozott Örvényesi-erdő kétszáz éves matuzsálemei a Balaton-felvidék legidősebb, erdőben (vagyis nem a települések parkjaiban, temetőiben) található fái – legalábbis az Országos Erdőállomány Adattár szerint. Az erdőt alapvetően molyhos tölgyesként írták le, néhol a virágos kőris magasabb arányával, de a völgy mélyén már a nedvességet jobban igénylő gyertyánok is jellemzők. A patak magas partjain valószínűleg fás legelő lehetett a múltban, ennek tanúi a hatalmas koronájú, idős tölgyek. Némelyik egészen jó állapotú, mások derékba törve vagy ágaikat lehullatva várják sorsukat a holtfává alakulás sok évtizedes folyamatában. A három keskeny, a vízfolyással párhuzamos, összesen 30 hektárnyi erdőrészlet védett, és Natura 2000 területen (Öreg-hegyi riviéra) áll, magántulajdonban van. Tulajdonosai átmeneti üzemmódban kezelik az erdőt.

A Balaton-felvidék megszokott, szubmediterrán hangulatú erdői itt a víznek köszönhetően egy inkább a hegyvidéki patakvölgyekre jellemző, üde erdőnek adták át helyüket.
