The route from Mohács to Osijek follows one of the most historically charged and ecologically diverse sections of the Danube route, beginning at the Battle of Mohács memorial, where the quiet fields belie the immense clash of 1526 that reshaped Central European history. From here, the trail heads south toward the Croatian border at Udvár, entering the gentle agricultural landscape of Baranja, a region shaped by centuries of shifting empires, winegrowing traditions, and river‑fed wetlands. Passing through Duboševica, Topolje, and Gajić, the scenery alternates between vineyards, orchards, and the broad horizons of the Baranja plain, with the church of Topolje rising unexpectedly from the fields like a solitary historical marker. The route continues through Draž and Zmajevac, the latter famous for its hillside wine cellars carved into loess cliffs, before turning toward the marshlands of Zlatna Greda and the edge of Kopački Rit, one of Europe’s great floodplain reserves where forests, backwaters, and reed beds create a landscape alive with birds and wildlife. As you approach Kopačevo and Bilje, the terrain becomes more settled, with traditional Baranja houses and quiet canals guiding the way toward the Drava. The final approach to Osijek follows the river’s broad floodplain, leading into a city shaped by Habsburg fortifications, river trade, and the cultural blend of the Pannonian basin. This stage offers a remarkable journey through battlefields, wine country, wetlands, and historic towns—an ever‑shifting mosaic of nature and history on the way to Osijek.

    Roadbook

From Mohács, the route heads south toward the Croatian border, passing the historic Mohács battlefield, where the decisive clash between the Kingdom of Hungary and the Ottoman Empire took place in 1526. After crossing into Croatia, the trail turns back toward the Danube and enters the extensive floodplain landscape near the confluence of the Danube and the Drava. This vast wetland system, rich in wildlife and waterways, forms part of what is sometimes called the “Amazon of Europe,” one of the largest remaining riverine floodplains in the Danube basin.

This section of the trail is still under development. Walkers who explore this route are encouraged to share their experiences and suggestions. If you would like to contribute feedback, you may consider becoming a trail inspector and contact the trail team via trailcoordinator@sultanstrail.com
