The route from Osijek to Vukovar follows the broad, fertile plains between the Drava and Danube, moving through a landscape shaped by centuries of agriculture, migration, and the shifting borders of Slavonia and Srijem. Leaving Osijek, the trail passes through Tenja, a village surrounded by fields and quiet canals, before entering the more rural expanses around Vera and Trpinja, where long straight roads, orchards, and wide horizons reflect the traditional settlement patterns of the Pannonian plain. This region carries deep historical layers—from medieval Slavic and Hungarian influences to the more recent scars of the 1990s, especially visible as the route approaches Borovo Naselje, once an industrial suburb and now a place where renewal and memory coexist. Continuing through Lužac, the Danube draws nearer, and the landscape begins to narrow into the river corridor leading toward Vukovar, a city whose baroque mansions, riverfront promenades, and powerful memorial sites mark it as one of the most symbolically charged places along the Danube. This stage blends open agricultural landscapes, multicultural village life, and the poignant historical depth that accompanies the approach to Vukovar.

    Roadbook

From Osijek, the trail follows the Danube eastward through the fertile plains of eastern Slavonia. The landscape consists largely of open farmland interspersed with small villages, orchards, and patches of riverine woodland.

The route gradually approaches the Danube again as it nears Vukovar, a historic river port with a long and often turbulent past. Situated on the banks of the Danube near the Serbian border, Vukovar has been an important trading town for centuries and today stands as one of the key towns along the Croatian section of the Sultans Trail.

This section of the trail is still under development. Walkers who explore this route are encouraged to share their experiences and suggestions. If you would like to contribute feedback, you may consider becoming a trail inspector and contact the trail team via trailcoordinator@sultanstrail.com
