Die Schutzhütte liegt in der Kernzone des Nationalparks Hohe Tauern (Kärnten), an dem von Gletschern ausgeschürftem Dösener See. Geologisch gehört diese perfekt ausgeprägte Hochgebirgslandschaft zum "Tauernfenster". Eine Besonderheit neben dem See stellt der "Dösener Blockgletscher" dar, ein Permafrost-Phänomen, welches man auf einem Nationalpark-Themenweg erkunden kann.
[Bn]Die ÖAV Sektion Graz erwarb 1905 ein Grundstück am Dösener See, auf dem 1910/11 das Schutzhaus erbaut und am 09.07.1911 eingeweiht wurde. Ermöglicht hat diesen Hüttenbau ein großzügiges Erbe des Grazer Handelsakademie-Direktors A. v. Schmid. Das einmalig schön gelegene Schutzhaus wurde mehrmals renoviert bzw. erweitert, so 1927, 1930, 1978/79 und 2008. Die Hütte ist mit einer Terrasse und einem Wintergarten mit Kletterwand ausgestattet. 2020 wurden sämtliche Lager in Kojen für 1 - 3 Personen umgebaut.
