Fränkische Schweiz and the Fichtelgebirge mountains surround Bayreuth and make the university town an ideal starting point for a hike. But not only in one of the two mountain regions, but also in the city itself there are beautiful paths on which you can also learn a lot about the history and culture of the city. Castles, castles and, of course, the world-famous Festspielhaus with the Wagner operas offer a varied leisure programme alongside meadows and forests.
The 10 most beautiful hikes in Bayreuth
Discover Bayreuth
With short city tours and walks in Bayreuth, you can ideally combine exercise with culture – and explore the city on your own. You will quickly realise that the university town has much more to offer besides the world-famous Festspielhaus. For example, the Margravial Opera House (UNESCO World Heritage Site) is also worth a visit, you can discover churches in various architectural styles and the New Palace is also worth a visit.
If, however, you prefer a bit more space and want to get closer to nature, then take a walk along the Red Main or in the student forest. Here you can switch off wonderfully after the cultural programme über Bayreuth and just let your mind wander.
Hiking in the footsteps of the margravine
An absolute highlight of the hiking tours in and around Bayreuth is the so-called Wilhelminenweg through the Hermitage. The historic park is one of Bayreuth's most important sights and, especially in good weather, is a fantastically beautiful place from which you don't want to leave.
Originally a simple forest enclosure that was filled with game for hunting purposes, Margravine Wilhelmine had the park rebuilt in the English style from 1715 onwards. Among other things, arbours and water features were built. The water features and fountains are still absolute eye-catchers in the grounds today, as is the Temple of the Sun, surrounded by the Orangery, in the centre of the Hermitage. The spacious grounds are perfect for walking or you can take advantage of one of the many seating areas and simply let the peaceful surroundings take their effect on you. The old castle and museum are also worth a visit.
When you are in Bayreuth, you should definitely plan a short hike to the Hermitage!
Following in the footsteps of Margravine Wilhelmine, the path leads through exciting landscapes and past historical monuments.
Experience nature up close on a hike
For those who not only want to explore Bayreuth historically and culturally, but are also looking for a pure nature experience, they will also find what they are looking for. For this you don't even have to make a longer trip to the Fränkische Schweiz, but can also start directly in Bayreuth. For example, an easy tour takes you over the Gröner Hgel - and from there you can enjoy the view of Bayreuth, especially of the Festspielhaus. In addition, a trip around the Schlehenberg offers an impressive view of the rocky landscape surrounding Bayreuth.
(Hobby) geologists should also definitely visit the Bodenmühlwand: This „Red Wall“ is 30 m high and several million years old. You can see the different layers of rock and earth from top to bottom along the wall - a spectacular sight. And if you are heading for the Red Main anyway, you should take a leisurely hike along the beautiful river valley.
A nice excursion destination in the Bayreuth area is also the Devil's Hole nature reserve – even the name sounds exciting. The best way to explore the area is to take a circular route that leads past the Oberwaizer waterfalls and through the Devil's Hole. If, in addition to the impressive nature, you are in the mood for a cultural programme, it is worth taking a detour to Fantaisie Castle (yet another name!) with its garden art museum and park.
