Here you can view the entire route of the third long-distance trail of the National Blue Trail, the Alföld Blue Trail, which is more than 800 km long between Szekszárd in Tolna county and Sátoraljaújhely in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén county, including elevation changes. You can also directly select the individual sections from the drop-down menu above.
In Sándor Petőfi's rightly famous poem, he presents all the beauty of the Alföld (Great Plain) in splendid poetic images, which was regarded as the most magical landscape of our country. By walking through the 13 sections of the Alföld Blue Trail, we can get to know this unique, unparalleled beautiful region, where we do not meet the classic, familiar tourist attractions, because it hides quite different treasures.
The landscape itself is what captivates the hiker: seemingly endless plains, acacia groves of the Great Plain, and the sight of cultivated fields. The first section is not the true plain yet: grassy sand dunes and ridges mark the horizon, but here is where we first get a taste of the atmosphere that could have also captivated Petőfi when he was on the Great Plain. On wide, soft roads, our feet almost silently sink into the sand, and in the hot moisture of the sky, the trembling sun draws a mirage on the horizon.
The Alföld Blue Trail is our country's second longest hiking trail. True to its name, it showcases nearly all characteristics of our largest and “most Hungarian” region, from the sand dunes of Kiskunság, across the endless plowed fields of the Körös region, to the forested areas of Nyírség. Walking the entire 869.1 km route requires considerable perseverance and openness; in return, it offers the traveler unique experiences. The Alföld Blue Trail starts from Szekszárd, the endpoint of the Rockenbauer Pál South Transdanubian Blue Trail, and runs to Sátoraljaújhely, where the National Blue Trail can be accessed. These three major blue-marked hiking trails form the National Blue Circle.
A brief history of the Alföld Blue Trail
In the early 1990s, the route construction began based on the needs of hikers from several Great Plain counties. The mainly privatization-related delays brought the project to a phase in 1996, the Millecentenary year, when the route opening hike could be held. The final establishment and marking were completed in 2000. At that time, the official stamp booklet of the hiking movement was also made, which was the first among long-distance hiking movements to be published with fully colored maps. The route markings were completely renovated for the first time in 2006 and again in 2015, as part of the project renewing the National Blue Circle.
Parts of our country's third-longest established long-distance hiking trail were included in the European Long-Distance Paths network by the EWV (European Walking Association), so the section between Szekszárd and Mindszent belongs to the E7, while the section between Sátoraljaújhely and Berettyóújfalu is part of the E3 and E4 trails.
In spring 2020, a significant change occurred in the life of the Alföld Blue Trail: instead of the previous 10, the total hiking distance was divided into 13 nearly equal-length sections, which provides the optimal division from the hikers’ perspective, adjusted to traffic hubs, richer both in natural attractions and cultural values. Alongside changes in the sections and route in some places, twenty new stamp locations were established, and the imprint of three has changed.

- Click on the list under the title and above the image, then select the section of the Alföld Blue Trail that interests you from the drop-down menu! If you want to view in gallery mode, you can choose the sections menu item below the picture.
- The hike can be done on foot by anyone aged six and over, regardless of citizenship, in any direction, broken down into any sections you like. There is no time limit for completion, and the duration is not restricted. It is not a race, so no entry fee is required. The route may be walked individually or in groups, but completion is only tied to the individual.
- You do not have to complete the Blue Trail all at once; you can divide it into sections according to your own schedule. The important thing is that the start and end points are each a stamp location! What is important: when interrupting the route and restarting there, you must stamp and date both times.
- Hikers must credibly prove completion to the Hungarian Hiking Association with stamps and dates entered in the original stamp booklet. Photocopied booklets are not accepted!
- Important information due to changes effective from March 23, 2020:
- As a result of maintenance work carried out on the Alföld Blue Trail in 2019, the route has been divided into 13 sections instead of the previous 10. This division is more optimal from the hikers’ point of view, adjusted to transport hubs, and the route passes through areas richer in natural sights and cultural values.
- The number of stamp locations on the route increased by 20 new places, and the stamp print changed in 3 places.
- These changes are already included in the new stamp booklet, and the current list of stamp locations can be found on this page at any time.
- Old stamp booklets remain valid, and the conditions for their use have not changed; therefore, there is no need to exchange them.
- Proof of completion of the Alföld Blue Trail can also be done using both the old and new stamp booklets together. In this case, both publications will be required during completion verification.
- Owners of old and/or new stamp booklets submitted for verification after March 23, 2020, will receive the unique Alföld Blue Trail badge free of charge alongside the certificate of achievement upon successful completion.
- In the new stamp booklet, for interrupted and restarted hikes, only one stamp is needed, but both dates must be recorded in the designated place. The previous practice remains for old publications: in case of interruption and restart, double stamping and dating is required.
- We provide an online supplement for old publications so that new stamp locations can also fit in the booklet. The supplement can be downloaded from this website.
- You do not need to revisit or re-stamp sections already walked and verified before route changes in the Alföld Blue Trail.
- Completion by bicycle is no longer accepted in the new booklet, but it was still valid with old booklets until June 30, 2021.

A so-called grace period was provided between March 23, 2020, and January 1, 2021, for the benefit of both inspectors and hikers. This period allowed everyone to get to know the changes and innovations.
