Vienna Woods

The Vienna Woods, a hilly, wooded mountain range west of Vienna, are the local recreation area of the Austrian capital. With altitudes between 300 and just under 900 m, marked trails and good connections from the city, the Vienna Woods are popular with hikers, mountain bikers, nature lovers and those seeking relaxation and have been protected as a UNESCO biosphere reserve since 2005. In addition to forests, the mountains also include meadows and fields, stream and river valleys, vineyards and impressive buildings.

The Vienna Woods are located in Lower Austria and Vienna on the border between the Most and the Industrial Districts. It stretches over 45 km in length and 20 to 30 km in width and reaches its greatest height of 893 m at Schöpfl. As the easternmost spur of the Northern Alps, the mountain range forms the north-eastern end of the Alps. The Vienna Woods are bordered to the east by the thermal line, to the south by the rivers Triesting and Gölsen, to the west by the rivers Traisen and Große Tulln and to the north by the Tullnerfeld and the Danube to the Wiener Pforte. To the north-east are the Schwarzenbergpark and the Lainzer Tiergarten in the Vienna city limits.

The Vienna Woods were used for a long time as an avalanche forest and hunting ground, and the formerly considerable forest area has shrunk as a result of agricultural use. Between 1870 and 1872 deforestation of large parts of the forest was prevented and today nature is protected by law and numerous protected areas.

A special event is the annual "Biodiversity Day", which takes place each year in a different part of the biosphere reserve and provides information about its habitats, animals and plants. With guided tours, a family programme and regional delicacies, the event becomes a highlight.

Even though the Vienna Woods are not only characterised by extensive forests, there are also meadows and numerous paths, secret places and impressive buildings and vineyards in the mountains.

The regions of the Vienna Woods

The Vienna Woods are divided into five regions. The Northern Vienna Woods encompasses the village of Klosterneuburg and its surroundings, stretches as far as the Danube and is bordered by Tullnerfeld, Wiener Pforte and the Vienna city area with Schwarzenbergpark and Lainzer Tiergarten. The hilly wine region can be easily explored by bike, for example the Danube cycle path runs along here. The Hagenbachklamm gorge is a special natural beauty in the northern part of the Vienna Woods. Those interested in culture can follow in the footsteps of wine, whose history goes back 900 years. Austria's oldest and second-largest winery is located in the region with the Klosterneuburg Monastery.

The Western Vienna Woods are a densely wooded recreational area with numerous hiking trails in the hills. Beautiful cycle paths and challenging mountain bike trails lead, among other things, to the Troppberg with its viewing platform and impressive panoramic views. In spring, the intense smell of wild garlic not only invites you to take leisurely walks through the region, but also to stop for a break and taste the regional delicacies.

The thermal spa region is characterised by hilly landscapes and vineyards. The wine-growing area stretches from the southern outskirts of Vienna along the chain of hills to the south of Baden. The ridge of hills with the Anninger (674 m) as the highest peak protects the vineyards on the foothills of the Vienna Woods from western weather.

The Helenental valley runs along the Schwechatbach stream and is particularly popular with hikers and nature tourists. Unspoilt areas with characteristic floodplain landscape, steep slopes with dense mixed forest – the habitat is ideal for numerous animals and plants. The local recreation area can be easily reached from the city of Vienna, offers not only beautiful nature but also excursion destinations such as the Rauhenstein, Rauheneck and Scharfeneck castle ruins, the Antonsgrotte cave, the Cholera Chapel or the Beethovenstein, and is also suitable for cycling.
Nature and culture meet in the Triestingtal. The southernmost part of the Vienna Woods surprises with an extraordinary diversity: from the plain to the vineyards and the gentle Vienna Woods to the transition to the Vienna Alps and the Mostviertel. Once again divided into Upper and Lower Triestingtal, the region offers impressive experiences not only for hikers (on the Via Sacra) and cyclists (Triesting-Gölsental cycle path), but also for climbers (on the Peilstein) and culture lovers (with mysterious stone circles, castle ruins and baroque pilgrimage churches as well as a great tradition of craftsmanship).

Hiking in the Vienna Woods

Hikers get their money's worth in the Vienna Woods. In addition to relaxed but impressive tours through the Hagenbachklamm gorge, on the Jakobsweg (Route of St. James) along the Troppberg panorama trail or in the lovely Helenental valley, there are more challenging tours to the Peilstein or the Schöpfl, the "roof of the Vienna Woods". Families with children will find numerous theme trails and culture fans can follow in Beethoven's footsteps.

Cycling in the Vienna Woods

For cyclists with stamina, there is the Vienna Woods cycle route, which leads over five days from Vienna through the most beautiful parts of Lower Austria. The thermal spa cycle path, the cycling star tours around Baden, the forest and meadow tour in the Helenental valley or the wine and culture tour as well as the summer and garden tour also offer great cycling experiences.

For mountain bikers there is an extensive network of paths in the Vienna Woods for all levels of difficulty. Several trail parks and signposted routes form a 1250 km wide network of paths with 80 km of single trails, which can be used from March to the end of October – in some trail parks, tours are also possible all year round.

Very charming and peaceful route through the forest and a beautiful meadow with apple and pear trees. The view from the tower is great, the remains of a quarry are interesting. We really enjoyed it.
