Muntenia can be a region full of contrasts in terms of outdoor activities. Your journey through Muntenia takes you from the highest mountain peak in Romania, to the most popular mountain ridges and ski slopes, then it descends to gentle hills perfect for cycling and through gorges ideal for climbing. It passes by the most famous wine region in the country and stops right at the edge of the Danube. The zero point of Romania - the capital Bucharest - is also located in Muntenia.

The most beautiful places in Muntenia
With a backpack or by bike, between mountain and sea
Mountain hiking and skiing are probably the main outdoor tourist attractions in Muntenia. This is because the most well-known Romanian mountains - the Bucegi Mountains and the Făgăraș Mountains, form part of the northern border of the region. Rail and road connections to these mountains are abundant, which leads to overcrowding of roads and mountain resorts in any season.
Probably the most vibrant mountain resorts in Romania are located in the Prahova Valley. The mountain resorts Sinaia and Bușteni are hotspots both for hiking enthusiasts and for those looking for bike trails or panoramic routes.

Moldoveanu Peak - the highest peak in the country - is not necessarily easy to reach. But that doesn't stop hundreds of hikers from choosing the shortest hiking trail to the ridge - through Valea Rea - this being also one of the popular day trips in Făgăraș.

If you want to enjoy less crowded hiking trails in the Southern Carpathians, choose the accessible but less traveled routes in the Iezer-Păpușa Mountains, Grohotiș, or the unknown Buzău Mountains.
For cyclists, both the submontane hills, sometimes marked with cycle tourism signs, and some alpine clearings are ideal for challenging rides. The Transbucegi Road takes you up to the mountain plateau relatively quickly, though with a considerable effort. Although the Transylvanian side of the Transfăgărășan road is the most photographed and promoted, the side facing Argeș County is just as impressive and can also be "attacked" from the saddle. On the other hand, if you cross southern Muntenia by bike along the Danube, in two or three days you can easily reach the seaside and reward yourself with a refreshing swim.

Dealu Mare Vineyard in Prahova County is one of the most renowned wine regions in Romania. The wineries lined up between Ploiești and Buzău offer guided tours with tastings included. Tourism in the area is more intense in autumn, during the grape harvest.
However, a bike tour on the county roads between Urlați and Zorești is a delight in any season; you will pass through hills with vineyards and fruit trees, and villages with low houses, whose owners sit at the gate at sunset.
