The most beautiful places in Țara Hațegului
The most important attractions and landmarks in Țara Hațegului are at some distance from one another, so a car would help enormously to discover them. On the back roads, you can certainly venture out on a mountain bike.
If you are passionate about history and archaeology, Tara Hațegului will captivate you. First with the stories about the island of Hațeg that once rose from the Tethys Sea. In Sânpetru, dinosaur fossils from the Cretaceous era (the only ones in Romania) were discovered in the 19th century. Further research revealed that ten different species of dinosaurs are linked to this region. The protected area of the "Tara Hategului" Dinosaurs Geopark is a must-see destination for families with children.
Situat în Depresiunea Hațegului (confudându-se, de fapt, cu aceasta), geoparcul reprezintă un amfiteatru natural înconjurat de munţi, în care se concentrează întregul peisaj al Transilvaniei; aici ...
The many fortresses and castles built in the medieval period or in the 18th century are also amazing points of interest in the Hațeg region. There is hardly a village or town where you can't see a defense tower or the ruins of a fortress.
The Colț fortress in Râu de Mori is thought to be the inspiration for Jules Verne's novel "The Carpathian Castle". The ruling Corvinus family apparently originates from Hațeg. On the other hand, many manor houses built by local noble families (Nocsa, Kendeffy, Fay) are today in an advanced state of decay and are not recommended on the tourist routes. For photography enthusiasts, however, they can be interesting sources of inspiration.
The Hațeg region is famous for some of the finest examples of stone churches in Romania. The most beautiful and oldest one is the church at Densuș.

Nearby the Hațeg Land
Țara Hațegului is conveniently encircled by mountains; its rough delimitations are Râu de Mori - Densuș - Hațeg - Baru. So the area is not only particularly beautiful but also an ideal place to set off on long hiking trails to the peaks of Retezat or Peleaga in the Retezat Mountains. Also from here start the trails to the Dacian fortresses in the Orăștie Mountains and to the Gradiștea Muncelului-Cioclovina Natural Park. In other words, perhaps a very good way to discover the surroundings of Hațeg is on foot.
Last but not least, we recommend you explore the wild water reservoirs along the Râul Mare River. Plan a bike route between Sântămăria-Orlea and Ostrovu Mic, and make a stop at each of the lakes. The views are superb. The main attraction is the Gura Apelor dam.
