Gradiștea Muncelului - Cioclovina Natural Park

Grădiștea Muncelului - Cioclovina Natural Park covers one of the areas with the richest historical impact for Romanians; at the same time, it's a very spectacular natural area so whatever you travel plans, make sure you include this one too. For many, this is one of those landmarks that you wish to discover in depth, that's why they return here over and over again. Here, we find the most cohesive complex of Dacian fortresses, including Sarmizegetusa Regia, but also the natural wonder locally known as "God's palm" - Fundatura Ponorului.

Overwhelming landscapes - dolines, caves, gorges, waterfalls, karst plateaus, and alpine plateaus specific to the karst relief of the Șureanu Mountains - add to the richness of the Grădiștea Muncelului - Cioclovina Natural Park, beyond the UNESCO World Heritage archeological sites (Sarmizegetusa Regia, Costești, Blidaru, Luncani-Piatra Roșie).

The park includes some of the most spectacular nature reserves not only in Hunedoara, but in Romania: the Ponorici-Cioclovina karst complex (with dozens of caves of strictly scientific interest, including Cioclovina), the caves Tecuri, Șura Mare, Bolii, or Crivadiei Gorges.

Thus, the natural park is an attraction both for those interested in learning the mysteries of the Dacian fortress complex and for photographers, mountain bikers, experienced hikers, or occasional hikers.

One can find here lots of options for activities or tourist attractions. It is almost impossible to make a list of places that you must see in the Grădiștea Muncelului - Cioclovina area and leave something aside. Moreover, the diverse landscape and numerous attractions encourage tourism all year long.

A rich network of marked tourist routes or nature trails, MBT, or offroad routes takes you across the natural park. The most accessible access points are Ohaba-Ponor, Luncani, Costești or Grădiștea de Munte. The highest point in the park - the alpine plateau in the Godeanu Mountains, respectively Godeanu Peak (1656m) - can be reached by passing through the Sarmizegetusa Regia site.

Speleology enthusiasts can enter several caves, but most of them are accessible only to specialists, with adequate equipment. Make sure you don't miss the headlight or a flashlight if you're planning on visiting any of the caves!

For adventure lovers, canyoning in the Jgheabului Canyon near Crivadia is a blast! The route descends by rappelling through nine waterfalls, only with a guide and with adequate equipment!
