Discover the region
The Țara Hațegului Dinosaurs Geopark lies, approximately, betwen the villages of Baru - Râu de Mori - Răchitova - Sântâmăria-Orlea. One can easily cover the distances from one place to the other by car, caravan, or bicycle. Your permanent background companion will be the Retezat Mountains.
The uniqueness of this place and the curiosity aroused around it consists mainly of the dinosaur fossils dating from the Cretaceous times discovered in Pui, Tuștea, and Valea Sibișeului. At the geopark house in the center of Hațeg you can find out more about the dinosaur fossils (bones and eggs) found in the Hațeg Valley and their scientific importance. So to get an overview of the reserve, maybe you should start with a visit there.
Beyond the stories built around these fossils, the land of Hateg displays ruins of medieval fortresses, traces of noblemen courts, stone churches, the ruins of the former capital of the Roman province of Dacia, the bison reserve, meadows with daffodils, or swamps with carnivorous plants.
When visiting, every season has its charms: in spring you can admire daffodil fields, in summer, rare plants in the Peşteana swamp, in autumn, the romantic colors of the Silvuț Forest.
The Țara Hațegului Dinosaurs Geopark has several thematic visitor centers (Geopark Houses) where you can find inspiration for cycling routes or visiting routes and tourist attractions.
