Discover the region
Lautrach's main attraction is the 17th century Lautrach Castle - a magnificent example of baroque architecture with beautiful gardens all around. Another highlight are the many churches in the area, such as the parish church of St. Michael or also the pilgrimage church of Maria Steinbach.
For art and culture lovers, there are many museums such as the Hofmühle Immenstadt Museum or the Memmingen Art Museum; while music fans can look forward to festivals such as the Allgäu Folk Festival.
But what would a holiday be without culinary delights? In Lautrach you will find traditional Bavarian dishes as well as regional specialities such as Maultaschen (filled dumplings), Spätzle (homemade egg noodles) and of course beer on tap! A recommendation is the Gasthaus Adler, which is known for its excellent cuisine.
The area around Lautrach also offers a wealth of outdoor activities. Hiking and cycling are popular activities in summer, while skiing and snowboarding are possible in the winter months. A special tip: the water treading area on the Iller cycle path - a refreshing experience on hot summer days! The nearby Rottachsee bathing lake also invites you to spend a relaxing day by the water.
And what to do if it rains? Visit the Allgäu Museum in Kempten or take time to relax in one of the many wellness facilities in the region.
In summary, Lautrach is definitely worth a visit. Whether cultural highlights or nature adventures - there is something for everyone to discover here!
Lautrach
The Castle
The centerpiece of the village is Lautrach Castle, built at the end of the 18th century as a provost’s residence and hunting lodge for the Prince-Abbot of Kempten. What sets it apart from other castles is a small theater hall featuring hand-printed wallpaper from the Parisian manufacturer Dufour—a true rarity. Similar pieces hang in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. In the 1920s, the castle became a meeting place for scientists and artists; Albert Einstein wrote in the guestbook, “Paradisiacal! Oh, what a pity that I must already leave.” Today, the building is a four-star hotel; the castle grounds—including the historic theater—are also open to day visitors.
For Active Travelers & Waterfront Activities
The Iller Bike Path runs directly through the municipality, following the river’s 146-kilometer route from the Allgäu Alps to Ulm. Right next to the bike path is a water treading area that offers welcome relief from the heat on hot summer days. The TSV Lautrach/Illerbeuren offers tennis, a DSV ski school, and—in winter—a cross-country ski trail and an ice rink. There’s a bird-watching station at the Iller Reservoir: quietly situated and perfect for a break.
Dining, Lodging & More
The castle also offers 80 rooms for overnight guests. The Gasthof zum Rößle, not far from the castle, is the down-to-earth spot in town, featuring a restaurant, guest rooms, and occasional music evenings. For those who prefer to stay on their own: the Trendelmühle vacation apartment, a renovated miller’s apartment under the roof of a historic grain mill.
