The gateway to the North Sea

The maritime flair makes the port city on the Elbe something very special. Famous sights are not only Germany's largest seaport, but also the landing stages, the fish market with its fish auction hall and the historic Speicherstadt, where merchants used to receive goods from all over the world. On a walk through the old and warehouse districts, you will get to know this side of the metropolis at first hand.

With just under 2 million inhabitants, Germany's second-largest city is shaped by water. It lies about 100 km inland from the mouth of the Elbe into the North Sea and is crossed by the Bille and Alster rivers. The city's canals and canals are spanned by more than 2,000 footbridges and bridges and surrounded by parks that invite you to take a stroll. Particularly worth seeing are the park „Planten un Blomen“ and the fruit-growing areas of the Vier- und Marschlande to the south of the city.

The Port of Hamburg is one of the largest transshipment ports in the world. Sea-going vessels arrive in the city from the North Sea via the Lower Elbe or from the Baltic Sea via the Kiel Canal, where almost 300 berths are available for the 8,000 or so ships that call here every year. The best way to explore this gigantic traffic hub is to take a harbour tour or visit one of the numerous museum ships.

Sporty and active in and around Hamburg

Numerous parks and forests, the Elbe and Alster rivers and the harbour invite you to take entertaining tours in and around Hamburg. No matter whether you want to go on foot or by bike: On the following pages you will find some suggestions for successful excursions in the Hanseatic city.

Our route draft for the Dresden-Magdeburg section is here on Outdooractive - Elberadweg from Dresden to Magdeburg. Cycling Germany - even after three decades, the Elbe remains a joy to ride and a brilliant example of how to do cycle tourism right - infrastructure, signage, information. Happy memories :)
