Running for about 1200 kilometers, the Elbe Cycle Route follows the course of the Elbe River from its source in the Czech Krkonoše Mountains to its outlet at the North Sea in the German port town of Cuxhaven. Along the way, it crosses a wide range of landscapes - from mountain valleys in the Czech Republic and southern Germany, through vineyard-covered hills, to broad lowlands and the flat coastal north. Elberadweg ranks among the most popular long-distance cycle routes not only in Germany, but across all of Europe. As is typical for German cycling routes, the wayfinding is clear and navigation is straightforward. Like most great river routes, it is largely flat and accessible to cyclists of all levels, although there are a few details worth discussing later in the article. The route is also renowned for its high-quality tourism infrastructure, including the nationwide Bett+Bike network as well as a smaller system of accommodations located directly along the Elbe.

While the Elbe Cycle Route is ideal for an extended cycling adventure, its excellent rail and road links also make it perfectly suited for shorter holidays or even weekend getaways in Germany. Many cities along the route naturally lend themselves to convenient and engaging trip segments. The journey begins near the river’s source, with a first leg stretching from Prague (initially along the Vltava) to Dresden – roughly 240 kilometers – mostly on the Czech side, winding through the dramatic Elbe canyon and the striking landscapes of Saxon Switzerland. The section described in this article follows next: Dresden to Magdeburg, covering around 300 kilometers. For a shorter, weekend-friendly option, consider riding from Magdeburg to Wittenberge (not to be confused with Lutherstadt Wittenberg) in northern Brandenburg – a 150-kilometer stretch well connected to Berlin at both ends. And finally, there’s the segment from Wittenberge to Hamburg (about 190 kilometers), with the possibility of extending your trip all the way to the North Sea and linking up with EuroVelo 12, the North Sea Route.
Author’s recommendation
The Elbe Cycle Route impressed us not only with its scenery, but also with the incredible variety found along the river. Within just a few days, we cycled through historic cities, vineyards, floodplain forests, UNESCO sites and peaceful riverside landscapes, with each day feeling different from the last. We particularly appreciated how easy it is to combine cycling with train travel, making the route suitable for both long-distance journeys and shorter cycling holidays. The section between Dresden and Magdeburg combines many of the route's greatest strengths - rich cultural heritage, excellent wayfinding and comfortable riding conditions. For anyone looking for a classic European river route, Elberadweg fully deserves its reputation as the queen of German cycle routes. More:
