Waldviertel is located in the northwestern part of Lower Austria, bordered by the Czech Republic and the Manhartsberg. Thanks to the intact environment and the light-stimulating climate, the quarter is considered a healthy ecoregion of Austria and is ideal for any outdoor activity.
The hiking region Southern Waldviertel is home to the Ysperklamm, a well-known natural monument, and the so-called Valley of Sundials, the Ysper-Weitental. From here you can enjoy views as far as the Alps, while in the heart of Waldviertel five hiking areas and leisurely routes with easy ascents and descents await you.
With a trail network of 2000 km, Waldviertel is also considered the largest mountain bike region in Austria. In seven nature parks and the National Park Thayatal you can discover many animal and plant species that are threatened with extinction elsewhere.

Gentle winter in Waldviertel
Waldviertel is also worth a visit in winter. The high plateaus of Waldviertel are among the coldest places in Austria, which is why the snow often lasts for a long time here. Waldviertel has made a name for itself, especially as a region for cross-country skiing. On countless cross-country trails you can glide through the winter landscape. Of course, the gently hilly landscape is also ideal for snowshoeing or winter hiking.
