Origin and history of the Museum Horn
The postal worker and passionate collector Josef Höbarth (1891-1952) founded the Höbarth and Mader Museum named after him in 1930, which houses one of the largest prehistoric collections in Austria. Since 1973, the museums of the city of Horn with their prehistoric, urban history and ethnographic collections have been housed in the two-storey building of the old citizens' hospital near the castle. A collection of antiquities (Arthur Nowak Collection) and documentation on the robber Johann Georg Grasel complement the other collections, such as the Stone Age display collection (from Neanderthals to farmers) or the new presentation of the Bronze Age (farmers, traders and bronze casters). The museum complex underwent a significant expansion with the addition of the Madermuseum, which has been displaying an extensive collection of agricultural tools and machinery since 1983. The founder of this museum, which was opened in 1983 by Federal President Dr. Rudolf Kirchschläger, was the farmer Ernst Mader, who ran a farm in Breiteneich near Horn and collected "rural antiquities" in his guesthouse. Since 2017, the museum has been called "Museum Horn". The new permanent exhibition Mensch.Boden.Technik - 7,500 years of agriculture is located in the former Maderhalle.
