This nature trail was inaugurated in 2015 and helps the rehabilitation of cardiovascular and diabetic patients as part of the 'Path to Health' program initiated by the Szent Ferenc Hospital in Buda. The stylish red heart-marked, 5 km loop is, of course, recommended for anyone: the pleasant, almost entirely flat circular route surrounds the Small and Big Hárs Hill, avoiding the climbs leading to the lookouts.

The Szent Ferenc Hospital in Budapest literally points the way to health, creatively assisting people with cardiovascular diseases or hypertension and diabetics. The hospital has developed a rehabilitation-supporting hiking trail next to the institution, which besides patients can naturally be used by anyone.

The trail uniquely not only helps in discovering nature but also allows observing our body's functions and reactions under the exertion of walking. A physiotherapist at the hospital helps plan the rehabilitation-supporting hike for patients, but anyone can observe changes in pulse rate and other health data at the beginning, during, and at the end of the hike using borrowable equipment.

Health data measured during the hike are evaluated by hospital professionals. For those showing abnormal values, disease-specific screening tests are offered by the hospital's specialist clinics. Participants can learn about the functioning of their heart and the body's reactions to exertion. An informational booklet about individual healthy pulse rate ranges and the program is available to hikers, along with borrowable aids such as a telescopic walking stick, pulse watch, and later a Bluetooth heart rate monitor compatible with smartphones.

However, the trail is freely accessible to anyone, so hikers often use it for a pleasant, not too strenuous loop beginning at Szépjuhászné. Even they may find the trail signs interesting, which teach how to measure pulse, what the numbers mean, the benefits of regular walking, and sometimes draw attention to interesting plants. The signs also offer a good opportunity for short rests.

The detailed description of the hike can be read under the Route Description menu.

    Author’s recommendation

    • The forest nature trail has its own – heart-shaped – hiking marking; this helps orientation on both the shorter 2.7-kilometer and the longer 5.1-kilometer sections. Recommended pulse measurement points are indicated by information boards.
    • If someone does not want to complete the distance alone or needs additional information during the walk, they can also choose a guided tour led by hospital professionals.

    Safety information

    • When designing the routes, professionals followed the latest expert recommendations, making them both safe and effective: shorter or longer hikes are selectable depending on the differing health conditions, and rest areas are created for those who fatigue more quickly.

    Tips and suggestions

    • If we do not start the loop from the hospital, it is worth starting from Szépjuhászné, which is easier to access.
    • With a few minutes' gentle detour from Szépjuhászné, we can visit the ruins of the Paulite monastery in Budaszentlőrinc.
    • During the hike, a short detour allows visiting the impressive, uniquely shaped lookout designed by Imre Makovecz, located on top of Small Hárs Hill.
    • Near the tracks or at the Szépjuhászné stop, we might encounter the Children's Railway train running between Széchenyi Hill and Hűvösvölgy, which is special because it is operated by children.

    Roadbook

    Itinerary :

    • Follow the red heart-shaped marking throughout.

    Route description :

A pleasant, almost entirely flat circular route that surrounds the Small and Big Hárs Hill. The first half of the nature trail is more uphill, then on a long downhill section, tourists wishing to recover can catch their breath.

Starting northwest on Széher Street in front of the hospital, we follow the markings, which are accompanied by Z+ paintings. Leaving the populated area, the road soon splits in two; at the first resting place sign, we take the left branch, following the nature trail's heart marking. We proceed along a forest promenade and soon reach the turning point. There is another sign here, indicating we have covered about 1.3 km so far; those who do not feel up to the longer distance should turn back toward the hospital here.

Those choosing the longer loop continue toward Szépjuhászné. We arrive at a true hiking hub of the Buda Hills: numerous routes converge here, and from this point, you can start toward the Big and Small Hárs Hill as well as the János Hill. The Children's Railway station and the buffet next to it attract even more visitors, and it is also easily accessible by both bus and car.

We cross the parking lot, then cross the tracks of the Children's Railway. For a very short section, the P, S, and Z↺ markings run together; then they split at the junction. We follow the heart and Z↺ markings to the left.

We continue on a wide forest road lined with oaks, well-marked running paths cut through the forest. About 1 km from Szépjuhászné, our only significant climb begins. When we reach the top, breathing heavily, fortunately we see another information board explaining the proper pulse measurement rules and what to do if the pulse is too fast. We rest and continue.

At a fork, we keep right. We are on the northern side of Hárs Hill, having just circled the Big Hárs Hill rising on our right-hand side, with the wonderful panorama offered by the Kaán Károly lookout.

The road slopes down gently and evenly, crossing several intersections, including the Z↺ which ran with us so far. If we want to make a detour to Small Hárs Hill and visit the uniquely shaped Makovecz lookout, we need to leave the nature trail here. Following Z↺ and then turning left on the S▲ marking, it’s about a round trip of 800 meters including a slight climb. From the lookout, there is a panorama over northern Buda and downtown Budapest towards Castle Hill and the Citadel. Northwest, at the top of Big Hárs Hill, we can spot the nearby Kaán Károly lookout; further northeast is Hármashatár Hill with its distinctive towers. In the small clearing below the lookout, benches, tables, and a fire pit await visitors.

If we do not make a detour or have returned to the nature trail, we continue straight ahead. We cross the Children’s Railway line again, carefully crossing the tracks. After about 200 meters, we reach a point where going straight ahead leads us back to Szent Ferenc Hospital if we started there, or turning right leads us back to Szépjuhászné if that was our starting point.
