Very beautiful circular route for fit mountaineers who are used to climbing in exposed terrain at the 2nd-3rd UIAA difficulty grade without a rope. The route becomes increasingly difficult up to the Fiederepass hut. Those who already reach their climbing technical limit in the small chimney towards Hochgehrenspitze should turn back at the latest here.

    Author’s recommendation

Only undertake the route in safe and dry weather.

    Tips and suggestions

The parking lot at the Kanzelwandbahn is not very large. You should try to arrive early.

    Roadbook

From the Kanzelwandbahn parking lot on a beautiful forest path via the Gehrenspitze to the mountain station of the Kanzelwandbahn. Those who want to shorten the route can save these 800 meters of altitude by using the cable car. Then past the Kanzelwand to the Walser Hammerspitze. Even on this easy section with short climbing parts, people repeatedly go off route on the way up to the Walser Hammerspitze. From here it becomes truly alpine. At first, you can still follow a small path but then the first climbing sections on the second ridge appear to reach the Hochgehrenspitze. Red dots are partially present for orientation. Now you descend via steel cable protections into the notch between Hochgehrenspitze and Oberstdorfer Hammerspitze. The route now becomes increasingly challenging, both the pathfinding and the climbing sections. At the summit of Oberstdorfer Hammerspitze is the crux about 13 meters vertically down. Although three footholds are available, the third UIAA difficulty grade is required. Two cemented abseil rings are available for rappelling. After that, there are some easier climbing passages before you reach the Fiederepass hut. Here you can take a comfortable break, as from here it is only an easy but long hike to the valley station of the Kanzelwandbahn. On the way, you can again stop at the inner Kuhgehrenalpe.

    Equipment

Those who do not want to climb down the crux (exposed vertical wall 3+, about 13 meters) should take a 30 m rope plus climbing harness.
