Wild and fractured: challenging crossing of the Geierkopf massif in the Ammergau Alps

    difficult
    Distance 15.6 km
    7:30 h
    1,350 m
    1,350 m
    2,161 m
    1,083 m

The Geierköpfe (2161 m) present themselves as a steep, forbidding rock bastion from the deep valley floor of the Ammertal and are just the right terrain for experienced mountaineers to practise alpine surefootedness and sure-headedness.

The approach via the Neualpsattel already presents itself as a sometimes daring mountain path and requires good orientation skills in the dwarf pine terrain. The reward for the effort is one of the most beautiful mountain routes in the Ammergau Alps, which moreover is not crowded even on weekends. Therefore, the assessment by veteran alpine author Dieter Seibert remains as valid today: “The crossing is done relatively rarely, although it is an interesting route (…)” A minor drawback is that the limestone on the long rocky ridge is not particularly compact. Therefore, all holds and steps of the short climbing sections, which never exceed UIAA grade II, must be carefully checked for their solidity. The route should only be attempted in stable mountain weather, i.e. absolutely not in thunderstorms.

    Author’s recommendation

Attention: The route is only accessible by public transport via the new Ammergau mountain bus (line 9624). Arrival and departure are therefore time-restricted: first arrival possibility at the starting point 09:26, last departure at the end point 17:33

Those who cannot complete the rather long route within this timeframe will find here other worthwhile route suggestions in the Ammergau Alps.

Follow the signpost Geierköpfe at the car park. After a few hundred meters, a sign points right out of the creek bed. On a narrow path to the Neualpsattel. Soon a faint path branches off to the right, leading through dwarf pines towards the ridge. Cross the open terrain below the east summit to the ridge. Now comes the first key point: a rock gully leads down to the notch and on the other side up a rock step. Continue along the ridge until you descend south before a drop and cross to the large notch. There, do not follow the cairn but traverse on the ledge heading west. Then turn right and to the ridge. Bypass a rock head and reach the main summit. Finally, descend southwest and follow the ridge to the west summit. Then head south to the fork, turn left here and back to the Neualpsattel.
