Pilis Bike Csergezán loop route (Nagykovácsi P+B)
In terms of location, Nagykovácsi is one of the luckiest settlements in the area. Wherever you look, you see only trees, forests, and hills. Wherever you start out, you will find paths, forest trails, and sights. This time, we head south, exploring the terrain in the Nagykovácsi-Telki-Budakeszi triangle.
The main sights include Anna-laki meadow and Képesfa. Between them, expect wide gravel forestry roads, dense forests on both sides, and undisturbed tranquility. Basically, considering about 90% of the route, we could recommend the tour to almost anyone, but due to the steep downhill on the southeastern part of the loop, we would rather warn beginners. The road is quite steep, deeply covered with crushed stones, challenging to stay in the saddle. Therefore, we recommend this tour more confidently to experienced cyclists.
Author’s recommendation
- If there is no space at the P+B parking lot, it is worth checking the edge of the settlement a few hundred meters into the route, where you can find many parking options.

- The downhill in the middle of the route is perhaps the most technical section among all Pilis Bike trails. Only start this route if both you and your bike are prepared for a specifically rocky, gravelly, steep descent.
Tips and suggestions
- Due to the dense road network and numerous intersections, it is advisable to bring a map or GPS device and still pay close attention to the markings.

Description:
Nagykovácsi - Képesfa (PB10, PB11)
- Terrain: asphalt, gravel road
Starting from the parking lot heading towards the church, then going around it, we quickly approach the edge of the settlement. After a left turn onto the Telki road, we are almost there. We cross a small bridge over the Ördög-árok (Devil's Ditch), which originates nearby and leads to the town centre, and slowly leave Nagykovácsi. The narrow, single-track road turning right joins a wide bulldozer track leading into the forest after a few hundred meters, then we reach the edge of the forest. The continuously ascending road becomes somewhat steeper, with limestone gravel replaced by fist-sized or larger stones. Fortunately, this doesn't last long: soon we reach Képesfa, which we can see on the right. In the aptly named Széltörés Forest, a devastating storm hit in 1924, unfortunately causing casualties. A holy picture was placed on the old oak standing here in memory of them.
Képesfa - Hegytető (PB10, PB11)
- Terrain: gravel road
From the junction, continue with an easy gear ratio on the blue cycling marking, as a continuous two-kilometer ascent awaits, becoming steeper in the second half. Initially, we ride on a comfortable, even dirt road, but the terrain gradually turns limestone gravel with larger stones. Occasional gullies also make the ride more challenging. Thus, not only do we have to overcome the climb, but we also have to carefully choose the track.
Upon reaching the junction, turn left! For a few meters, we ride together with the Z▲ marking (which leads to the nearby Nagy-Kopasz), but soon we turn off with a right turn.
We travel on a relatively flat and even section among the trees. In this area full of intersections, we change direction again, joining the P▲ marking briefly.
Hegytető - Hidegvölgy (PB11)
- Terrain: gravel road
Heading south from the junction, we ride on a two-track road closely surrounded by forest on both sides. The road gently undulates, just preparing us for the upcoming section. After riding a bit more than a kilometer, the landscape opens up and a serious descent begins. This is perhaps the most technical descent in the Pilis Bike network, where only the more experienced riders can stay in the saddle. We have to overcome deep gravel and steepness together. It's sometimes worth looking up or even stopping as a spectacular panorama unfolds before us.
The ground gradually becomes easier to handle and the slope mellows. Approaching the junction, we can already hear traffic noise since we are near the road connecting Budakeszi and Telki. Turning right here, a long straight awaits us, ending with a rocky descent indicating the nearby Hidegvölgy resting place. We can continue straight towards Annalak or turn left to reach the rest area soon.
Hidegvölgy - Képesfa (PB11)
- Terrain: dirt road, gravel road
If we have visited the developed resting area, after leaving the parking lot we cycle a few minutes on the Z▲ marking, then turn left upon reaching a clearing! In the dense forest road network, we must follow a right-left-right-left combination, so it's better to watch for markings carefully at every intersection. After a bumpy descent, we cross the paved road leading to a waste collection and recycling site on the area of an abandoned quarry. We continue rolling until reaching the wide bulldozer track! Turning right here, a long ascent begins. Although not extremely steep, it lasts quite a while.
Upon reaching the top and a fast roll, we find ourselves in the Anna-laki meadow, where it is worth taking a short or longer break because it is a particularly calm and peaceful place. Refresh before continuing, as another climb awaits! We pedal northward on a charming limestone road shaded by tree canopies. If we keep up the effort, we soon reach the Képesfa junction.
Képesfa - Nagykovácsi (PB10, PB11)
- Terrain: gravel road, asphalt
Heading north, we first ride on a rather unpleasant bulldozer track with large stones and gullies, so concentrate strongly! Gradually, the surface improves, becoming smoother and easier to handle. At the end of the straight descent, Nagykovácsi appears, surrounded by fields on both sides. On the left, the bare cliffs of Széna Hill provide a spectacular backdrop. After leaving the barrier, be careful because instead of rolling into the last street of the town, we need to keep left on a narrow, grassy path! Upon entering the large village, just one right turn awaits, and we are almost at the town center. After going around the church, we find the P+B point on Kossuth Lajos street.
Public transport
- Although BKV buses run quite frequently to Nagykovácsi, unfortunately bicycles cannot be transported on them.
- The nearest train station is Solymár on the Budapest-Esztergom railway line, with about 8 km distance and 250 m elevation climb to consider.

Directions
From Solymár railway station, the easiest way to reach Nagykovácsi center is southwest along the PB8 marking. The two settlements are almost merged near Kerek Hill, making this the easiest approach. Within Nagykovácsi, it is not necessary to stick to the PB8 detour towards Alsó-Zsíros Hill, the Mária route branching left leads directly to the town center.
Parking
Nagykovácsi is easily accessible by car from Budapest via Hűvösvölgy. If suitable parking space is not found at the P+B point, there will definitely be enough parking at the edge of the settlement a few hundred meters after the start of the route.Coordinates
