Mountain Bike Route 2b Heltersberg (short route)
Mountain biking in untouched nature with an idyllic ride right through the Pfälzerwald.
We start this route in the small village of Heltersberg. After a leisurely roll-off, we almost cross the entire village and immediately turn onto a downhill trail. It goes down on tight curves before we bike uphill again on a narrow path. We cross the state road and continue on cycle paths and through the forest on a wide path through the Schwarzbach valley to Johanniskreuz. There we can take a break and get refreshments at a nearby restaurant.
A visit to the adjacent House of Sustainability, which also has a small farm shop with regional products, is also worthwhile.
After a short road section, the route leads immediately onto a flat but fun trail. Then we bike again through the middle of the forest; the forest road stretches longer before we turn onto a challenging, rocky singletrail. The trail is very sandy especially in the lower part, so one should be careful not to slip with the front wheel; often, there are higher steps to master, so it is advisable to ride the trail rather cautiously and slowly. This ends directly at the Sägmühle campsite. Here too, you can take a short break at the nearby pond and enjoy the nature.
We then continue on a sandy path back to the state road before reaching Schmalenberg. After passing through the village, a steep downhill awaits, followed by another climb on a narrow path. We cross Heltersberg again and return to our starting point.
Author’s recommendation
The Sägmühle campsite is not only idyllically located by a lake, but is also the end point of a long and beautiful singletrail.
