The wild and romantic Karlstal Gorge is considered one of the most beautiful hiking destinations in the Palatinate Forest because of its red sandstone rocks, numerous small waterfalls and ancient stock of trees. A small wooden pavilion stands in the middle of the gorge and is a popular photo subject.
Friedrich Ludwig von Sckell, the founder of the landscape garden in Germany, was commissioned around 1780 to transform and redesign the Trippstadt palace gardens. He wrote the following about the Karlstal: "One of the most beautiful valleys I have seen (...) lies in the hands of Trippstadt (...), then called Karlstal."
