From the castle-fortified little town of Güssing, we wind through the borderland to Hungary and thus through a landscape and visually somehow an entirely different world, a no-man's land somewhere between Austria and Hungary. Very worth seeing and breathtakingly winding too!
Güssing Castle, the oldest castle in Burgenland, has been perched on a rocky cone above the region since 1157. It is the most distinctive landmark and houses a museum with 5,000 exhibits. Visitors can look out over the Pannonian Plain from the bell tower and use the castle for cultural events or weddings. Schlaining Castle, strategically located, was once a stronghold and now belongs to Burgenland. It houses the European Peace Museum, a fitting use for a former war castle. Fürstenfeld, known through the hit song by the band S.T.S., is a popular place in Southeast Styria. The Loipersdorf Thermal Spa, part of the spa region, attracts visitors with its healing springs, already used by the Romans. Bad Gleichenberg, a renowned spa town, is known for its healing springs and beautiful spa park. Gleichenberg Castle, first mentioned in 1185, was destroyed in the Second World War; its remains are still recognizable today as a historical site.
