The Marienquelle is a healing spring in Ollersdorf in Southern Burgenland. The name of the spring is based on a pronounced veneration of Mary, the foundation of which was laid in the year 1626 by a legend.
The actual origin story of the spring is not known. A narrative passed down in popular tradition describes the spring's origin as follows: In the days leading up to April 23, 1626, a rumbling of thunder had been heard. This increased to such an extent that on April 23, the earth began to tremble, and at a spot in the meadow “Krautgärten,” a jet of water shot up from the ground. The tale further states that a few days later, a statue of Mary appeared at the place where the water bubbled up from the ground. The residents later decided to build a chapel at the site of the water's emergence in honor of this statue. This finding also marks the origin of the veneration of Mary in this place.
Even today, numerous people still pilgrimage to the site to seek protection and blessings. The spring is also said to have a healing effect. It is believed to be particularly effective in the areas of the head, brain, eyes, nerves, tongue, teeth, throat cavity, larynx and thyroid gland.
