Along the closed road it goes along the rushing Gschlößbach. Past the rock chapel to the alpine settlement Innergschlöß and further towards the valley end. At the bridge you have to decide: over the glacier path and along the foot of the Schlattenkees, or the shorter variant, which winds steeply in switchbacks up the glacier-polished slope. Below the closed Old Prager Hut both paths meet again. Onwards to the New Prager Hut.
Stage 2: The second stage of the hut route at Großvenediger leads from the New Prager Hut to the 3660 m high Großvenediger – the experience and viewpoint highlight of the entire route. We descend southwards and reach the Johannis Hut.
Across wide boulder fields it goes along the Niederen Zaun, before being roped on the edge of the Schlattenkees. Initially the ascent leads somewhat steeper along the crevasses, eventually you slowly and leisurely trudge over wide glacier surfaces, towards the summit ridge of Großvenediger. Over the increasingly narrowing ridge it goes across to the summit cross. On the descent from the viewing platform, the magnificent Dolomite view spoils you. Across the glacier it goes between Rainerhorn and Hohem Aderl towards the south. Before the Defreggerhaus the legs are rested for a moment. But the day's goal is not yet reached. In the shadow of Weiß- and Zopatspitz it goes downhill over mountain meadows. In front of the Johannis Hut, deck chairs invite to a bath in the last sun rays.
Stage 3: The third stage of the hut route at Großvenediger leads from the Johannis Hut via Türmljoch across into the Maurertal and to the Essener-Rostocker Hut – with a detour to Simonysee.
Over steep mountain meadows the path climbs higher. At Türmljoch the next glacier and summit sea comes into view: Simony-, Gubach- and Malham peaks pose as a dramatic backdrop above the Maurertal. On the descent you immerse more and more into the idyll of the "Stredacher Winkel". On the way to the Essener-Rostocker Hut the detour to Simonysee is worthwhile. A bit goes uphill again, along the rushing glacier river.
Stage 4: The fourth stage of the hut route at Großvenediger begins with the ascent of Rostocker Eck. Then follows the descent into Virgental.
The home mountain of the Essener-Rostocker Hut, the Rostocker Eck, is an easy-to-hike panoramic summit. We ascend over the moraine, below us lies Simonysee. The steep but short ascent takes place via the perfectly laid Carl-Bremer-Weg. At the summit we can fully immerse ourselves in the view. The circular route allows the descent southwards and initially back to the Essener-Rostocker Hut through a fascinating raised bog landscape. After the further descent through lovely larch forest along the wild Maurerbach, civilisation has us again in Virgental.
