The Großvenediger towers majestically as the highest peak of the Venediger group in the Hohe Tauern and Salzburg. At a proud 3657 metres above sea level, it rises along the main Alpine ridge where the border between East Tyrol and Salzburg runs.
Its silhouette is characterised by an imposing glaciation, including the Schlatenkees and Obersulzbachkees glaciers, which artfully wrap around the flanks of the mountain. Four striking ridges separate the individual glaciers from each other and give the mountain a unique character.
The first ascent of the Großvenediger was a significant event, characterised by Ignaz von Kürsinger, who described the summit as a "world-old majesty". However, the transience of the glaciers has left its mark and the height of the summit has decreased significantly over the years since it still measured a proud 3674 metres in the 1980s.
The history of the mountain is characterised by hardships and successes. Daring men dared to climb the Großvenediger early on, but it was not until 1841 that Josef Schwab, known as Hausstetter Sepp, succeeded in reaching the summit with his group. A group of 40 men set off from Neukirchen am Großvenediger and overcame the challenges of the Obersulzbachtal and the Stierlahnerwand to finally reach the summit. Among the 24 who reached the summit was Ignaz von Kürsinger, who once again coined the term "world-old majesty".
Today, the Großvenediger can be climbed via various normal routes, which include the north ascent, east ascent and south ascent. In addition to these routes, other popular ascents lead from the Kürsingerhütte via the Venedigerkees to the north ridge or via the Obersulzbachkees to the Obersulzbachtörl and from there via the west ridge to the summit cross. The variety of routes reflects the versatility and fascination of this imposing mountain, which still attracts adventurers from all over the world centuries later.
