Relaxed cycling not only along the Adige, but also following Roman footsteps – that is what the Adige cycle route along the Via Claudia Augusta promises, the ancient Roman road from Donauwörth to Venice. The varied landscape ranges from the almost alpine surroundings with views of mighty glaciers and mountains in the upper Vinschgau, over the lovely apple orchards and gentle vineyards in the lower Vinschgau, to the extensive fruit and wine plantations in southern South Tyrol.

Without major climbs, the well-developed, almost continuously asphalted cycle path leads us from the Reschen Pass via Merano and Bolzano to Salurn, the southernmost municipality of South Tyrol. Apart from a few sections, the route largely follows the course of the Adige, which cuts deeply through the gorge-like valley in Vinschgau, while in the South Tyrolean lowlands south of Bolzano it flows straight through flat fields. Numerous sights along the way are worth a visit, such as Marienberg Monastery, Churburg Castle, the gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle, the two branches of the Messner Mountain Museum MMM Juval and MMM Firmian, or the fruit market in Bolzano. The charming little town of Glurns or the spa town of Merano with its Mediterranean flair invite you to linger and enjoy a leisurely stroll. A detour from Bolzano to Lake Caldaro, the warmest bathing lake in the Alps, is also worthwhile.

    Author’s recommendation

You should allow at least two days for the route to have enough time to visit some of the sights along the way!
