The frescoes of Ravanica are particularly important for their innovative themes and artistic approach. Although many have suffered severe deterioration over the centuries, enough survives to demonstrate the originality of the monastery’s decorative programme. Unusually for Serbian churches of the period, the frescoes place strong emphasis on scenes depicting the miracles, Resurrection, and Ascension of Christ, reflecting the dedication of the church itself. Throughout Ottoman rule and later historical upheavals, Ravanica remained an important spiritual and cultural centre, helping preserve Serbian religious identity and literary tradition. Today, protected as a Monument of Culture of Exceptional Importance, the monastery continues to function as an active religious site and pilgrimage destination.
