Schnittlingen, part of the municipality of Böhmenkirch, is a vibrant community in the Swabian Alb. What sets it apart is its diverse production of renewable energy, primarily through biomass, biogas, rooftop solar panels, and wind turbines on Schnittlinger Berg—where state-of-the-art wind power technology has been developed since 1957.

Roadbook
From our starting point, we head north out of town via Nenninger Straße, following the signs as we hike across open fields to the forest. A detour to the Messelstein lookout point rewards us with a magnificent view of the Drei-Kaiser Mountains. We head back through the woods, cross the Messelbergsteige, and, with a bit of luck, can spot hang gliders at the launch pad on the edge of the Messelberg glider airfield. Following the well-marked trail along the Albtrauf with fantastic views into the Filstal valley, we hike via Oberweckerstell to the radio tower on the Schnittlinger Berg with its wind and weather adventure park. Along the way, there are numerous places to stop for refreshments: in the center of Schnittlingen at the “Hirsch” inn, at the “Fliegerhütte” at the “Messelberg” glider airfield, or at the “Eybacher Hütte,” the hiking lodge of the Swabian Alb Association (open only on weekends and holidays in some cases).
