The hike leads from the spa town of Bad Liebenzell on the East Trail to the Golden City of Pforzheim, through idyllic valleys and past a romantic castle ruin to the classic destination Kupferhammer.
The spa town of Bad Liebenzell in the Nagold valley south of Pforzheim is the starting point of this varied hike, which mainly follows the East Trail of the Schwarzwaldverein.
Particularly attractive on the way is the Monbach Gorge. It formed about 350,000 years ago between the Günz and Mindel ice ages, when the Nagold cut into the Buntsandstein sandstone of the Monbach valley. Powerful water masses transported debris and stones here and shaped this picturesque gorge. It is protected as a nature reserve in its upper course called “Monbach, Maisgraben und St. Leonhardquelle” to preserve its natural state. Fallen trees remain in the brook bed, and hikers must change sides several times on sometimes slippery stepping stones.
Another sight on the way to Pforzheim is the Liebeneck Castle Ruin high above the Würm valley. Its keep and some wall remains are still preserved.
The end point of the route is the Kupferhammer in Pforzheim. It is not just a road junction but the gateway to the Central/North Black Forest Nature Park and the starting point of three long-distance hiking trails of the Schwarzwaldverein: the approximately 240 km long East Trail leads to Schaffhausen, the approximately 230 km long Middle Trail to Waldshut, and finally the quality hiking trail West Trail, about 285 km long, to Basel.
Author’s recommendation
Due to the proximity to Bad Liebenzell, the Monbach valley is very busy on weekends and during the holiday season. Those who prefer solitude should avoid these times.

Roadbook
The hike starts at the Kurhaus in Bad Liebenzell. The path leads counterclockwise around the Kurhaus into the Kurpark and then left to the Nagold river to the signpost “Kurhaus” (316 m). Along the Nagold, it goes left in a northern direction along the East Trail, passing the locations “Lengenbachmündung” and “Jägersteg”. We cross the Nagold on the “Markgrafenbrück”; then it goes left via Ulmenweg and Schillerallee to the fork at “Forchenhalde”. On Eisenbahnerweg, we reach the locations “Beim alten Bahnwärterhaus” and “Monbach”. The “Obere Monbachhalde” leads us into the Monbach valley.
After 3 km, we reach the “Monbachbrücke”, cross it, and continue hiking up the steep path on the East Trail to the junction “Oberes Monbachtal” and to the Schwarzwaldverein memorial stone for the 100-year anniversary of the East Trail. Straight ahead, the path continues to Neuhausen (504 m).
After leaving the forest, we first turn left until the end of the street, then right to the main street, then left and after 50 m right over the Riedäcker to the “St. Wendelin's Chapel”.
The detour to the chapel leads back to the path marked with the yellow diamond, then right over orchards past two trout ponds, crossing a street to Hamberg (484 m).
Behind the “chapel” the path turns right. It continues along the main street to the signpost “Hamberg”, where we turn left into Schelmenstraße. From here, we follow the East Trail again (black-red diamond) downhill into the Bußwald and the Liebenecker Berg to the Dollbronner Klinge. The path leads right over the “Dollbronner Bridge” (326 m) and up the hill on the main street to the left. In the right curve, the path sharply turns right towards “Ruine Liebeneck” (407 m). Opposite the rest area of the castle ruin begins the Bannwald.
Here the path leads left down the hill to “Liebenecker Kopf” and after about 3 km crossing the main street via Arkbrücke (300 m). Directly behind the bridge, we turn sharply right and hike on the path into the village Würm. The “Weg der Rassler” continues along the Würm river. Passing “Würmbrücke” and “Schützensteg”, we reach the destination “Kupferhammer” (259 m) in Pforzheim after the location “Kahlhardt”.
