From Dottingen, go uphill in the Swabian Alb Biosphere Reserve to the "Buchhalde" (866 m). The theme of this hike is the Eisenrüttel volcanic vent. Basalt was mined here from around 1880 to 1900. At that time, around 45 people found work in the vent of the Swabian volcano. It is not documented whether iron ore was mined. The local authority responsible for mining was the State Basalt Works Urach. Today a spring feeds the 15 to 20 m deep hollow of the former basalt mine. The return hike goes along the Dottingen ski slopes and over the highest point in the Münsingen district, the Buchhaldenkopf.

Roadbook
From the Buchhalde hiking car park, go uphill on the left side. Pass the ski hut and continue to the left. After another 50m, the path turns right. We walk along the "Buchhalde" (866m) and pass the viewpoint "Häule". Keep right at the sports home and walk past it. At km 1.4, turn right and follow the path until it joins a road again. Follow it straight uphill and at km 1.7, keep right. Always follow the path straight until we reach a road at km 2.6. Here is the hiking board "Basalt mining at Eisenrüttel". Keep right on the road and after approx. 70m, turn right again onto the forest path. Follow the path for another 700m and at the crossroads continue straight ahead in a long left curve. At km 3.8, keep left, following the path (do not go right up the steep hill). We always hike along the path and pass the ski slopes of Dottingen. Ahead you then come out again at the ski hut (km 4.6). Turn left at the hut and go down the hill back to the Buchhalde hiking car park.
