One of the most popular routes in Apuseni, although not necessarily an easy one. Successfully tested by many families with children for the spectacular landscapes is the Ponor Fortresses Circuit.
The route starts and ends in Poiana Glăvoi, which is why many people choose this place as a "base camp".
If you were to listen to professional descriptions, the trail is not exactly for beginners nor for those with fear of heights: it crosses several technical passages - secured by chains - and reaches above several dolines ("fortresses") at a dizzying height.
The route descends a lot at the beginning, through a mixed forest of conifers and deciduous trees. The tree roots form steps on this part that both help and fascinate.
You reach quite quickly above Doline 2. The last 100 meters are critical, with ladders, chains, and a very steep path. You can descend to the doline or continue the route with a strong climb and another descent on scree.
From here follows a final climb - perhaps the hardest, longest, and most sustained. Once you reach the "balconies" - the viewpoints - you feel like you are on a boulevard, especially in the warm season when everyone comes to enjoy the views.
From here onward, the route is easy, without other major challenges, and leads you back to Glăvoi.
Author’s recommendation
- Those who are beginners in mountain routes may encounter difficulties on various sections, especially due to lack of training or inappropriate footwear.
- The circuit can also be done in reverse, but it will be harder in terms of problematic passages.

Tips and suggestions
Doline 3 can be crossed from the inside (entering from one side, exiting on the other). It is not part of the official route but can add an element of adrenaline and variety. It is recommended to cross with someone who has done the route before, and to have proper equipment (headlamp, spare footwear).
