Selected alternatives for you
The country's first accessible forest walkway was created back in 2006 in Nagyrét, one of Budapest's favorite green areas. You can choose the completely flat circular route or the forest detours made exciting with wooden ramps, depending on your fitness and possibilities.

The accessible educational trail is a one-meter-wide cobblestone strip running around the edge of Nagyrét, which connects to forest detours or shortcuts at three points. The just under one-kilometer path can be tackled independently by wheelchair users with considerable experience using just an active wheelchair, while less experienced ones are strongly recommended to have a companion. Also, help might be useful for those seated in heavy, battery-powered electric wheelchairs.

Along the route, we encounter twice mini-serpentines specifically designed for wheelchair users (and stroller users), leading towards forest adventures, then returning to the path around the clearing. Both in the forest section and on the flat meadow, there are fire pits easily accessible by wheelchair, allowing for organizing grilling during the hike.

    Author’s recommendation

    • If you skip the detours, there is an 800-meter loop that runs around the edge of Nagyrét, almost completely flat terrain.
    • On the serpentine ramps made of assembled hardwood - although truly made to be rollable - there are occasionally broken boards (these road defects were still passable in August 2020, but maintenance is overdue). However, if they are wet or snowy, traveling on them is NOT recommended due to the risk of slipping. The rest of the path is in good condition both in terms of slope and construction (although being cobblestone path, some elements are slightly sunken).
    • It is recommended to bring drinking water/fluids, during the summer season to provide mosquito and tick protection, snacks, and fire-starting tools.
    • During the inspection, we found that the steepness of some sections may cause problems, so those who choose the forest ramp path should definitely start the trip with a companion!

    Itinerary:

    • Follow the T marking of the educational trail.

    Route description:

The designated path essentially leads around Nagyrét with small detours that you can insert into your route depending on your preference and fitness. We join the accessible path from the parking spot, going right and traveling on a completely flat section. We reach the first wooden ramp, where there is an option to wander a bit into the forest! The path leads upward with a gentle slope and large curves.

After the ramp, we follow another paved path leading back to Nagyrét, reaching a forest junction halfway, where there is a fire pit, resting place, and a small sheltered area decorated with carved stones but without a roof. The forest mainly consists of native oak, hornbeam, maple, and ash trees, with a thin lime/gravel soil layer. The trees are middle-aged, their shading foliage rises several meters above the surface, providing a climate that feels pleasant even in great heat.

The forest junction is an ideal place to rest and cook bacon (the forest is relatively well maintained, but as it is poor in fallen dry twigs, firewood must be brought if planning a group program). This resting spot is also located near the flat top of a small mound; afterward, you can continue 100-150 meters upward on the wide forest path.

The constructed path turns back towards Nagyrét from the "forest main square," then reaches the oval grassy area after several turns on another wooden serpentine. Here, there is also an accessible fire and resting place, which can be chosen for a break if you only walk around the meadow.

After 100-150 meters, you arrive at a modern sports field installed on one of the meadow's long sections, where there are basketball, small soccer, and handball courts, all completely accessible and evidently continuously maintained.

Rejoining the main route on this small detour, after about 200-300 meters, you return to the starting point.

    Public transport

    • Not accessible by public transport.

    Parking

    • People using wheelchairs can reach the location by car. The parking designed for them can be accessed from Nagykovácsi Road: you need to turn off a small junction road next to the forester's house, where you find three accessible parking spaces before the barrier. (The road is not easy to spot; it is located about 250 meters from the Nagykovácsi Road-Szépjuhászné Road-Nagyrét Road roundabout towards the city).
    • Another parking option for wheelchair users is at the intersection of Nagyrét Street and Villám Street. There is no designated wheelchair parking here, but you can easily join the path from here on the paved cobblestone surface.
