The Balatonfenyves Economic Railway is quite young compared to many of its counterparts, which have been in operation for up to a hundred years (as forest railways usually are). Built in the early fifties, it once served the Nagy-Berek region over a network of almost 50 kilometres. Today the network has shrunk, but one of the lines ( Somogyszentpal), where there is traffic, is used by local people going to work and schooland in 2021, following the renovation, trains will also start running again to Csisztafürdő - mainly for tourists.

Located south of the south-western tip of Lake Balaton, the Nagy-Berek is a small areaknown to anyone from István Fekete's two novels, The Thorns and Winter Berek. The author wrote both books in the same decade, when the small railway with the centre of Balatonfenyves was built, in the first half of the 1950s. The countryside south of Lake Balaton in this area was once part of the lake, but was later transformed into a lake by the waves. The sandy sediment was used to build a barrier, which separated the southern bay from the deeper lake bed. The marshy area thus created was abandoned in the 20th century. In August 1950, the Balatonnagyberek State Farm was established in the area, which was limited in its suitability for farming due to the above-mentioned limitations. They built stables and farms and decided to build a narrow-gauge railway to serve them.

Construction of the railway started in October 1950 and lasted for about five years: the building of a series of lines, generally perpendicular to each other, initially aimed at the major roads and then at the smaller onesThe network was then extended to the surrounding villages (Somogyszentpál, Táska, Csiszta). The final section was laid in 1956 towards Csisztapuszta, where oil exploration drilling resulted in a 42-degree, trenchlessrich in hydrocarbonate and sulphuric hot water, which was soon used to build a spa.

The initial horse-drawn locomotives were soon replaced by motorised locomotives, followed by steamers and thermaland the locomotive C50, the locomotive of all Hungarian small railways, found a home on the southern shore of Lake Balaton. At the height of its history, the 760-millimetre-long, almost 50-kilometre-longgauge, mainly transporting goods from farms and villages.agricultural produce - peat and lime mud - from the farms to the railway station at Balatonfenyves, but it was not long before regular passenger services began: From 1956, the small railway became the means of transport for the inhabitants of the area.

At the end of the 1960s, despite its heavy traffic, the railway was completely dismantled.but fortunately the decision or its implementation was regularly postponed. While freight traffic declined (the extraction of lime mud ceased), passenger traffic on the Chisinau branch increased, and from 1985 there were even nostalgic trains to the spa, operated by steamers. In 1987, the line was extended by 600 metres to Chiszta, and in 1990 the last The last freight train on the Balatonfenyvesi GV was built in 1990, and then some lines were slowly phased out and eventually dismantled. In 2002, the Csisztai and Táska lines were closed down, and the ominous shadow of closure was repeatedly cast over the only remaining Somogyszentpáli line (in 2009, the railwaymen on duty on the light railway were already shopping for the 'farewell party', and the Berek railway was saved at the last minute).

By 2021, however, the neglected Chisinau line will have been completely renovated, providing a high quality passenger service from Imremajor to the city of Chisinau.Today, there are 13 kilometres of the Nagy-Berek to Csisztafürdő.

    Safety information

    • When walking between the railway tracks, it is important to remember that a special train or a maintenance train may arrive at any moment, and the forest is a surprisingly good sound insulator. Always keep your distance: the width of the largest rolling stock can be up to 2.5 metres, so there is 70-70 cm on either side of the trackIn addition, there may be overhanging cargo or a door that has been left open.
    • Do not walk between rails, on switches or within ten metres of them: the area around them is usually oily, the sleepers are slippery, and the points are slippery. The turnouts contain a large number of tripping hazards, which can remain hidden, especially at night or in the snow.
    • Never shift gears: the weight can fall on your feet, a shifting slide rail can damage the hands and feet of othersA train coming onto a wrongly positioned switch can cause an accident, even at very low speeds.
    • Keep a few metres in front or behind a stationary vehicle when crossing the tracks:the train or its locomotive can start at any time without a special signal.
    • The surface of the rails is slippery in wet weather, even when covered with a thin layer of rust.

The timetable of the Balatonfenyves economic railway

    Roadbook

The Balatonfenyves GV station is still reminiscent of the era of construction, the 1950s - fortunately, we can say, as this is part of the atmosphere of the small railway. The trains depart from the curved tracks in front of the station, while the traction trains leave from theThe train yard, from which the light railway is served, is located a little further away, next to the main line tracks. The station is accessed from the neatly kept, bead-lined platform, which is also used as aThe four-axle carriages, heated by a stove in winter, are familiar from other light railways. The Balatonfenyves is the only tramway that is also used by professionals (i.e. people go to work or school, especially on the Somogyszentpál line); the Csisztafürdő line is more for tourists.

The small trains first cross the road 7 and then pass between the houses of Balatonfenyves for a few stops.metres before turning alongside a canal towards the Nagy-Berek. Leaving the motorway overpass, the train rolls under huge trees for the first two kilometresthe first two kilometres on the track, which was renovated in 2019, the atmosphere of the small railway is almost lost, with the usual rattling missing. After the Imremajor stop, you reach the junction of the Chisinau line, on which the railway line was built in 2000.In 2021, following a major refurbishment, trains started running again.

On the way to Csisztafürdő, there is no need to expect any particular excitement, with trains rolling almost silently along the rebuilt track. But it's always worth looking out of the window, as the fauna of the Great Berks, presented in a few sentences and photos on the walls of the carriages, will show itself to the lucky ones on the journey. The train seems to make a pointless bend here and there - in most cases, the original back is still visible. It's worth imagining the map of the original layout, which makes more sense of today's lines. The sharp-eyed might also notice, for example, where the Taschka branch line has branched off (trains now pass through a traffic siding nearby).

The landscape, although flat, is varied: fields alternate with groves of woodland, and looking northwards, the Badacsony massif on the other side of Lake Balaton is always visible. After arriving at Csisztafürdő station, the small locomotive quickly drops off the front of the train, and the Badacsony Badacsony is on the other side of the Badacsony Badacsonyand then, after only ten minutes, it starts back to the shores of Lake Balaton.
