You’ll easily strike it rich on this challenging gravel bike tour: passing the legendary field of stone lenses, the route takes you into an ancient mining area, the wealth of which is still evident today in the castle town of Friesach.

It is said that a farmer near Guttaring was once severely punished by God because he went to work in the fields on a Sunday instead of attending church. From that day on, he harvested nothing but ‘stone lentils’ from his field. Today we know that these so-called ‘stone lentils’ are fossilised giant single-celled organisms that thrived on the floor of the primordial ocean millions of years ago. To this day, they tumble out of the field near Guttaring whenever it is ploughed. Picking them up and taking them with you is not only allowed, but encouraged. It is more difficult with the other treasures along this challenging gravel bike tour: the blast furnace in Urtl, the oldest of its kind still standing in Europe, has long been empty. And the tunnels in the Ratteingraben and around Zeltschach are either overgrown or have collapsed, or both. The silver once found here made the castle town of Friesach powerful. It also lies on the route before heading back to the starting point in Althofen – with a hearty “Glück auf”, the old miners’ greeting.

Starting from Friesach railway station, cycle first along Olsastraße, over the level crossing, to the TC Friesach tennis courts on Zeltschacher Straße. Passing the tennis courts, turn left after about 200 metres onto Gaisberger Straße, the first climb towards Gaisberg. Follow the road into the village of Gaisberg and, passing the parish church of Gaisberg, continue straight on until you reach a junction with a wayside shrine in the village of Oberdorf. At the junction, turn right onto a gravel road towards Wagendorf/Zeltschach.After a short while, you’ll come to another fork in the road, where there’s a bench and a drinking fountain on the left. Here, follow the sign to the right towards Friesach/Zeltschach. Stay on this gravel road until you pass two houses, then keep left. Shortly afterwards, you’ll reach the main road in Zeltschach, where you turn left into the village of Zeltschach – this is easy to spot thanks to the village sign. Follow the main road and keep right. After a few metres, there is a junction to the right; here, follow the sign towards Guttaring/Kräuping/Dobritsch and stay on this road. You will pass a fork in the road where there is a bench under a large tree; here, turn right. Follow the route to the next signposted fork. Then follow the sign to the left towards Dobritsch/Kräuping/Sattelbogen, where the road starts to climb again. Follow this mountain road to a fork, where you keep to the right again and follow the sign for Kräuping/Dobritsch/Guttaring. Follow the route until a road branches off to the left, where a sign points towards Waitschach/Guttaring. Follow the route downhill and turn right at the next junction towards Ratteingraben, where you cross a small bridge. Follow the road along the Silberbach stream. A sign pointing towards Guttaring indicates that you are still on the right road. Ride through the Urtlgraben until you reach the village of Urtl, where you will pass an old blast furnace. Following Hochofenstraße, you will arrive in Guttaring a short time later. At the junction by Hotel Moser, turn right and follow the sign for Silberegg/Althofen. Passing theAchatius Chapel, take the left-hand lane onto Silbereggerstraße at the narrow section of the road between two buildings. Then follow the R7c along Silbereggerstraße to Althofen. At the first roundabout, take the second exit towards Althofen. At the second roundabout in the village, take the second exit towards Friesach again and follow Friesacher Straße until you reach a stop sign on the L62. Here, turn right towards Friesach and then immediately turn left off the main road towards Micheldorf/Hirt. After passing the Hirter Brewery and leaving the village of Hirt, turn left onto the R7 or ‘Hirter Straße’. Drive through the railway underpass and follow the road through the village of Micheldorf. At the football pitch and before the playground on the left-hand side, turn right onto the dirt track. Follow the path to a junction with Friesacher Straße and turn right. After passing under a railway bridge, you’ll come to another junction where you turn left onto Gradeser Landesstraße and, shortly afterwards, turn right again towards Lorenzenberg. Continue along the road over the bridge and through the underpass, then turn left at the fork in the road towards Gulitzen/Grafendorf. After passing a farm, you’ll reach a junction and turn left here onto Gulitzenweg. Keep left here all the way to Grafendorf. You then follow Hemmaweg to the junction with Zeltschacher Straße, where you’ll find yourself back in front of the tennis courts or the start of the route.
