Silberegg ist ein Dorf südöstlich von Althofen. Aufgrund der Silbervorkommen existierte hier schon in der Römerzeit eine Ansiedlung, worauf Funde von Gebäuderesten hindeuten.
„Alles Silber“
Schon zur Römerzeit waren die Silbervorkommen in der Provinz Noricum bekannt. Im Mittelalter prägte man die legendären Friesacher und St. Veiter Pfennige aus heimischen Silber. Manche Ortsnamen weisen noch heute auf den Edelmetallbergbau hin. Auch für Silberegg kann die Existenz von Silbervorkommen angenommen werden und aus Bodenfunden und Funden von Gebäuderesten wird auf eine frühe römische Besiedlung geschlossen. Im Mittelalter gab es eine Burg, die 1274 mit Meinhalmus de Silbereke nachgewiesen ist. Das Schloss entstand Anfang des 16. Jahrhunderts und wurde bereits in der jetzigen Form erbaut. Erster gesicherter Schloss-Besitzer war ein Hans von Silberegg, sein Grabstein befindet sich in der Pfarrkirche Hl. Georg. Im Laufe der Jahrhunderte waren namhafte Kärntner Gewerkenfamilien Eigentümer der Liegenschaft. Nach einem Besitzerwechsel im Jahre 1996 wurde das Schloss vom Keller bis zum Dach renoviert. Unter anderem stellte man die historische Farbgebung wieder her.
