Our combined cycle tour calls for fitness! From Upper Lusatia to the Elbland, we cycle along seven cycle paths through eastern Saxony. Upper Lusatia with its charming interplay of landscapes is the starting region: to the north, above the "City of Towers" Bautzen, a landscape of ponds and heathland awaits, while the south offers impressive variety with its rugged mountains and gently rolling hills with a wealth of trees.

Your cycle tour from Upper Lusatia to the Elbland

The most remarkable thing about Upper Lusatia is certainly the dialect with its rolling "R": just ask for directions to Dresden and you will hear it live! The half-timbered houses and the Sorbs with their customs and special language are also unique here. Upper Lusatia is rich in legends that revolve around treasures that are said to have been hidden in the mountains here in the past. These include, for example, the magician "Pumphut", who is said to be found in Wilthen, and "Krabat".

From Upper Lusatia, steeped in history, on to the star of the German cycle paths - the Elbe Cycle Path. No wonder, given the diversity of culture and nature. In the far east, the dramatic cliffs of Saxon Switzerland tower up, only to merge into the gentle hilltops of the Meissen Spaargebirge towards Dresden, which is considered the smallest mountain range in Saxony. In between, unspoiled nature alternates with terraced vineyards, interspersed with peaceful village greens such as Altkötzschenbroda and the picturesque old towns of Meissen and Pirna.

In the far north-west, the Lutheran town of Torgau with the Renaissance Hartenfels Castle awaits with many attractions. Combined with a dash of Dresden's high culture, from art collections to the Zwinger. The Semper Opera House can be seen from the bike and in summer the route leads right through the movie nights on the banks of the Elbe - there really isn't more to a bike tour than that!

    Roadbook

You can set off directly from the Jonsdorf "Dreiländereck" Nature Park Youth Hostel:

    Umgebindehausradweg

The Umgebindehausradweg is an approximately 115-kilometer long-distance cycle path in Germany, south-east Saxony. It leads from Neukirch via the Upper Lusatian Highlands and Zittau Mountains to Zittau. Yellow plaques with the inscription "Holiday landscape of the Umgebindehäuser" lead along the cycle path, which mostly uses developed roads. The Umgebindehaus cycle path runs between Neusalza-Spremberg and Großschönau for almost 60 km, mainly on low-traffic roads and therefore on asphalt. However, sections with forest and meadow paths and different surfaces also dominate the entire cycle route and are easy to cycle on. The cycle route is of medium difficulty due to the gradients and hills, but is also suitable for children. The greatest differences in altitude are to be overcome at the beginning (around Weifa) and at the end (around Jonsdorf) of the cycle route.

    Oder-Neisse Cycle Route

The Oder-Neisse Cycle Route is a long-distance cycle route of around 630 kilometers in the Czech Republic and Germany. It largely follows Germany's eastern border with Poland . The Oder-Neisse Cycle Route runs 55 kilometers in a south-north direction through the Czech Republic from the source of the Lusatian Neisse in Nová Ves nad Nisou, following it to where the Neisse flows into the Oder. West of the Oder, the route then leads along flat river landscapes to the Szczecin Lagoon and to Ahlbeck on Usedom . In the Czech Republic, the cycle route has the route numbers 3038 in the upper reaches and 14 in the section south of Liberec to the border. The route in Germany corresponds to D-Route 12.

    Saxon city route

This 150 km long route has four aces up its sleeve: Namely the four most beautiful towns of the "Upper Lusatian Six Towns League". Kamenz, Bautzen, Löbau, Görlitz - in the 14th century, they were the important founding members of the Upper Lusatian League of Six Towns, which defied the robber barons and protected trade. As a result, the towns of Upper Lusatia developed along the Via Regia on an equal footing, without any of them taking a clear lead. Today, they present themselves with beautifully restored old towns and architectural testimonies from the Middle Ages to Classicism. The cycle route begins shortly after Dresden and leads past picturesque country castles, first to Gottfried Ephraim Lessing's birthplace of Kamenz, where a museum is dedicated to the great poet of the Enlightenment. And if you want to delve even further into history, the dinosaur park in nearby Kleinwelka is the place to go.

    Spree Cycle Path

The Spree Cycle Path runs for 420 km from the source of the Spree in Upper Lusatia to Berlin, where the Spree flows into the Havel. The cycle path starts at the source of the Spree in Eibau and follows the course of the Spree through the Lusatian uplands to Bautzen . This part of the route has many ascents. From Bautzen, you cycle through the Upper Lusatian heath and pond landscape and thus through somewhat flatter terrain. The route continues past the open-cast lignite mining area near Spremberg . The Peitz pond area follows after Cottbus. The cycle route continues through the Spreewald with its widely ramified canals. The river then joins up again and you can cycle on via Fürstenwalde to Erkner on the outskirts of Berlin. There, the Spree Cycle Route connects to the R1 European Cycle Route. In the Saxon section, some of the signposting needs to be supplemented and maintained. In the brown coal landscape between Uhyst and Schwarze Pumpe in particular, it is almost completely missing. The route is partly varied and close to nature on good paths, partly primarily suitable for bridging distances.

    Rübezahl cycle path

The scenic Rübezahlradweg international cycle route leads through Saxon and Bohemian Switzerland, the Zittau Mountains, the Jizera Mountains and the Giant Mountains. It crosses national borders five times on its approximately 250-kilometre route through Germany, the Czech Republic and Poland. Along the route, cyclists can enjoy numerous vantage points with breathtaking views. Nature offers hilly to mountainous landscapes with dense forests, lush meadows, numerous natural monuments, fascinating rock formations and waterfalls. Historic towns, picturesque mountain towns and mountain villages with traditional specialties, historical sights such as knights' castles, palaces and interesting museums also invite you to linger.

Saxon Central Uplands long-distance cycle route

Most of the 91-kilometre cycle route leads through the Upper Lusatian Uplands, a low mountain range made of this very rock. Many of the wooded hilltops invite you to linger with mountain inns and wonderful views. The Zittau Mountains Nature Park adjoins the Upper Lusatian Uplands. Germany's smallest low mountain range is a well-developed vacation region with a dense network of hiking and cycling trails and attractive excursion destinations such as the castle and monastery complex on Mount Oybin and family-friendly leisure activities. A historic narrow-gauge railroad connects the spa towns of Jonsdorf and Oybin with Zittau at the end of the cycle trail. The route is signposted throughout and the surface is very well surfaced almost everywhere. Between Ebersbach and Großschönau, the route mainly follows roads with little traffic; here you cycle on asphalt for almost 60 km. Other sections are dominated by easily passable forest and meadow paths. The hilly to mountainous landscape makes moderate demands on the cyclist's fitness. The greatest differences in altitude have to be overcome on the sections around Weifa and Jonsdorf. The Saxon Central Uplands long-distance cycle route is part of the D4 Zittau-Aachen route.

    Elbe cycle path

The temptation of a special experience - a cycle tour along the Elbe. The 860-kilometre Elbe Cycle Path is one of the most attractive and varied cycle routes in Europe. The area between the North Sea and the Czech border is characterized by diverse landscapes, exciting history and unique cultural heritage. On German territory, the route leads through seven federal states - 180 kilometers of which pass through Saxony. It is mainly flat, mostly asphalted and mostly car-free. The route is particularly suitable for beginners, leisure cyclists and families with self-guided children aged 10 and over. Due to the prevailing wind direction, it is recommended to cycle upstream along the Elbe cycle path.

    Public transport

Travel by train via Dresden or Görlitz to Zittau. From Zittau, continue on the narrow-gauge railroad (www.soeg-zittau.de) to the terminus in Jonsdorf; tickets can be purchased from the conductor on the train. Possibly change at Bertsdorf station, the train splits here, one to Jonsdorf and one to Oybin, ask the conductor.

Or take the public bus (www.kvg-zittau.de) from Zittau station to the station stop in Jonsdorf. The youth hostel is signposted at the station.

    Directions

Take the highway exit Bautzen-Ost and continue via Löbau and Zittau (6/178). On the Zittauer Ring, turn off at the signs for "Zittauer Gebirge". At the Olbersdorf traffic circle, head towards Jonsdorf.

We advise against taking the Bautzen-West exit, and thus the 96, due to roadworks.

From Monday to Friday, we recommend taking the Weißenberg highway exit due to the volume of transit traffic to the Czech Republic on the B6. From Weißenberg continue to Löbau - use the highway feeder road (new 178). From Löbau continue as indicated above.

    Parking

10 parking spaces at the hostel. Additional parking spaces opposite the youth hostel in the public parking lot at the Gebirgsbad.

Additional information on parking: The rescue lane at the hostel must be kept clear for access by the fire department.
