Die Leckwitzer Schanze (eine slawische Burganlage) entsteht in Folge der Besiedlung durch slawische Stämme (6./7. Jhd.). Diese waren dadurch Nachbarn des Frankenreiches.

Nach dem Untergang des römischen Weltreiches und der Völkerwanderung siedelten hier Slawen. Sie nutzten natürliche Gegebenheiten zum Burgenbau. In „Ernst-fällen“ verließen sie ihre zerstreut liegenden Siedlungen, um sich vereint zu wehren. Auf einer Felsdurchragung mit Sandlössauflage am Ufer der Elbe, die hier in mehreren Armen die Weite des Tieflandes durchfloss, schufen sie sich diese Wehranlage.Sie war durchweg aus Holz und Erde gebaut und bestand aus einer Haupt- und Vorburg. Ob sie Sitz eines Suspan im Gau Daleminze war ist nicht belegt.Mit dem Sieg von König Heinrich I. (929) blieb die Elbe anfangs Grenze. Der Burgward Boruz (Boritz- 983 erstmals erwähnt) auf der gegenüber liegenden Elbseite lag noch näher an der Elbfurt, die zu einem schon damals bedeutenden Handelsweg gehörte. Nach und nach gelang es daraufhin den von Meißen aus wirkenden Burg-, Markgrafen und Bischöfen Einfluss auf die östlich der Elbe befindlichen Gebiete zu nehmen.Feste Burgen, Rittergüter und Klöster aus Stein sowie befestigte Städte, wie Hayn (heute Großenhain), entstanden in der Folge.Die Leckwitzer Burg wurde bedeutungslos und verfiel. Heute ist dieser Ort ein geschütztes, gut erhaltenes Bodendenkmal. Es befindet sich im Landschaftsschutzgebiet „Riesaer Elbtal und "Seußlitzer Elbhügelland“.  Auf einer Fläche von 1,7 ha, dem NABU Landesverband Sachsen e.V. gehörend, ist diese Fläche auch ein wertvolles Naturschutzobjekt.
