Full of energy, you pedal across the Eifel National Park through the idyllic Rur Valley past the Rursee. Admire the house hedges and dense green forests on this challenging cycling circular route with some elevation.
The route goes once around the Monschau region, therefore there are some elevation meters to conquer over the roughly 50 kilometers, just so much beforehand. However, the effort is rewarded by beautiful high-altitude trails, dense green forests and a great natural experience. The landscape is characterized by the picturesque Rursee located in the middle of the Eifel National Park and the idyllic Rur Valley. Typical for the landscape are also the impressive meter-high house hedges within the settlements, which were laid out as wind protection for the individual farms, as well as a distinct hedge system. The former cloth-making town Monschau offers itself for a first break after just under 20 kilometers and awaits with a magnificent half-timbered idyll like no other. After a stroll through the historic old town, you cycle along the former railway track of the Vennbahn to Lammersdorf, where during a visit to the Farmers' Museum you can gain insights into the lifestyle of the Eifel ancestors. The route then leads back to the Eifel lake district via Rollesbroich, Strauch and Steckenborn, where the idyllic Eifel village Woffelsbach entices with a wide range of water sports. In Rurberg, a visit to the National Park Gate is worthwhile, which informs about the unique natural landscape of the Eifel National Park, before returning to the starting point in Einruhr. There you can end the day with a cozy boat trip.

Route Character
Step 1 – Rur Valley and Monschau Hedge Landscape:
In the Rur Valley you cycle along the Rur through dense green forests that provide shade on sunny days. This way you slowly overcome the first elevation meters. Shortly before Monschau, you mainly encounter the impressive meter-high house hedges. They serve as wind protection for the individual farms.
Step 2 – the picturesque Monschau:
After about 20 kilometers you arrive in the former cloth-making town of Monschau. A walk through the old town shows you the many magnificent half-timbered houses.
Step 3 – more culture along the route:
Continue along the former railway track of the Vennbahn to Lammersdorf. In this district, a stop at the charming farmers' museum is recommended, where you learn more about life in the Eifel around the turn of the century. Then you pass through the towns of Rollesbroich, Strauch and Steckenborn. The latter is home to the Steckenborn Village Museum.
Step 4 – back at the Rursee
Finally, you return to the Rursee. In summer, you can take a swimming break at the Woffelsbach Bay or at the natural outdoor pool at the Rursee center. In Rurberg, check out the National Park Gate and learn more about the unique natural landscape of the Eifel National Park. At the end of the route, you can take a boat trip across the Eifel lake district.
