Die Streuobstwiesen auf dem höher gelegenen Weidenhövel zeugen von einer langen Tradition: Bis zu Beginn des 2. Weltkrieges war Rurberg bekannt für sein Obst und belieferte viele Dörfer der Umgebung. Mit dem Bau der Rurtalsperre im Jahr 1939 versanken die weit über den Talboden verstreuten Höfe und Wiesen im See. Sein heutiges Ortsbild verdankt Rurberg der Aufstockung der Rurtalsperre im Jahr 1958 und der damit verbundenen Hinwendung zum Tourismus.
