Ortsteile Rauchenauel und Seifenauel verdanken dem kurvenreichen Rurverlauf mit seinen weiten Flusskehren ihren Namen. Das Wort „rau“ bedeutet übrigens „unwirtlich, mit Gestrüpp bewachsen“ während sich Seifenauel von „Sief(en), Rinnsal, feuchte Senke“ ableitet.
