Old half-timbered houses, enchanted corners and tobacco fields as far as the eye can see – this is the dreamlike backdrop of the South Palatinate Tobacco Route, which passes through what was once the largest tobacco-growing area in Germany.
Vast tobacco plantations that emit their distinctive, pungent scent in the warm midday sun, and in between the unmistakable drying barns with wooden slats – the South Palatinate presents itself surprisingly differently. Along the tobacco fields with their intense aroma, the route goes from Mörlheim via Ottersheim, Bellheim and Rülzheim to Hatzenbühl and further to Herxheim/Hayna. Along the way, cyclists discover old half-timbered houses, picturesque farming villages, and can make stops at direct marketers. At the Herxheim Museum, a special department informs about tobacco cultivation in the South Palatinate. In Hatzenbühl, Germany's oldest tobacco-growing community, informative panels along a "Tabakrundweg" explain the annual tobacco cycle from sowing through harvest to drying. The circular route can be started at several points, e.g., Landau/Mörlheim, Herxheim-Hayna (multipurpose hall), as well as from Bellheim and Rülzheim. The circuit can be ridden in both directions.
FOR YOUR INFORMATION: The cycle path will receive new signage in 2025. Please do not be surprised if you encounter two different logos along the route, as shown in the pictures.
UFFBASSE! – Campaign for considerate interaction in nature
- Be considerate on the move – Always behave attentively, kindly and considerately towards everyone you meet. This applies especially on farm tracks, where winegrowers, farmers and foresters also work on weekends.
- Picnic & waste – Take a garbage bag with you for the journey and take your waste back home. Use only the furnished rest areas for breaks and picnics.
- Nature conservation – Stay on designated paths and avoid unnecessary noise when in nature. Leave the forest by dusk at the latest to avoid disturbing the rhythm of nocturnal animals.

The route has a very special charm from mid-July when the tobacco blooms. In August, you can watch the field workers during the harvest.

Safety information
Cycling on farm tracks - Our cycling routes often run along paths shared with others. We therefore ask for considerate and friendly behavior at all times. Winegrowers, farmers and foresters use the farm tracks through fields, forests and vineyards for their daily work – also on weekends. Due to work activities and/or weather conditions, the paths may sometimes be heavily soiled. Special caution is also advised when cycling on roads in and around Palatinate villages. Please strictly observe road closures and detours.
Hazard situations - In case of an emergency, quick help is needed. And even though mobile phones can send GPS signals, classic emergency points are often the fastest option. These are located at places readily accessible to rescue vehicles. Remember the points with green signs and a white cross. In an emergency, return there and give the number on the sign to the emergency services. This way, rescuers will know where to find you.

Roadbook
From Mörlheim Church, turn left onto Offenbacher Weg towards Offenbach. Follow the signs to the southern edge of Offenbach, then turn left (later a farm track) to Ottersheim. 140 m after the Ottersheim town sign, follow the signposting to the right and with several changes of direction (2 x ground markings) until shortly before Bellheim. Here turn right slightly uphill to the farmstead and continue to Rülzheim. After the descent in the hollow path on the edge of Rülzheim, cross the main road (caution!). Then follow the signs to the right on the cycle path along the main road to Herxheimweyer. The signs lead here out into the fields, later through the forest to the industrial area of Herxheim. After crossing the road at the edge of the forest, follow the cycle path to the right and the signposting through Herxheim to the roundabout near Möbel Gilb. In Herxheim is Villa Wieser, a noteworthy fountain with Herxheim motifs and an ice cream parlor along the way. At the roundabout, cross the road and immediately turn left and after 100 m turn right along the main road to Hatzenbühl. Hatzenbühl is Germany's oldest tobacco-growing community. On the Hatzenbühl Tobacco Circular Route (length: 2 km), which begins at the St. Wendelinus Church in Hatzenbühl, you can learn about the annual cycle of tobacco from sowing through harvesting to drying and weighing.
From the Hatzenbühl Church at the bus stop, turn right to the west through the forest towards Erlenbach. At Erlenhof, turn right as signposted, following the “Tabaktour” routing through Hayna (beautiful old tobacco barns on the outskirts) to Herxheim. At the roundabout near Möbel Gilb in Herxheim, this time turn left onto the unpaved path along the bypass. After the wooden bridge, turn left. The signposting leads through western Herxheim and later through the fields (possibility to stop at Wagner Ranch near Herxheim) back to Landau-Mörlheim. Through Landau-Queichheim back to Landau station.
