Tour description
The start and end point of this route is at the train station in Schöppenstedt. This is a circular route, so the route can alternatively be started and ended at any other location along the described path.
From Schöppenstedt train station, the route leads past the town hall and the Till Eulenspiegel Museum northwards to Kneitlingen, the birthplace of Eulenspiegel. At the St. Nicolai Church, you will find not only his monument but also numerous installations reflecting the life of the jester.
Following Till's baptism path, you come to Ampleben with its baptismal church and the baptismal stone located in the middle of the village. After mastering the strenuous ascent at the edge of the Elm, an impressive view opens up of the so-called "Tuscany of the North".
A little further west lies the fruit-growing settlement of Evessen, since the southwestern edge of the Elm offers good conditions for fruit cultivation.
Several farms cultivate areas with apple, pear, and cherry trees, the fruit of which is sold in farm shops.
Past the adventure quarry Markmorgen, the route leads via Erkerode to the Lucklum manor. This centuries-old estate complex with manor house, estate church, farm and residential buildings, and a landscape park invites visitors to explore. The route continues to Veltheim, where a detour to the moated castle with St. Remigius Church is mandatory. Shortly afterward, the Destedt castle park is on the sightseeing program.
Hardly leaving Destedt, you arrive at the edge of Abbenrode to the post mill, on whose open grounds several agricultural machines can also be viewed.
Through Bornum and Lauingen, the circular route now leads to Königslutter. The mighty imperial cathedral can be seen from afar on the horizon and seems to tower over the city. The sightseeing tour starts at the historic market square. Directly next to the town hall are the town church and the GeoPark information center. Through the city center, the tour then leads to the imperial cathedral, the Museum of Mechanical Musical Instruments, and the over 900-year-old Kaiser-Lothar-Linden (stamp station 25).
Along the Lutter river, Königslutter is left behind, and a kilometer later the Lutterspring spring house is reached. After a short stop, it’s time to pedal hard again, because the Drachenberg must be climbed. As a reward for the effort, a fast descent into the Reitling valley follows.
As expected, the altitude lost must be regained on the next climb. At the top, you learn a lot about the life of the indulgence preacher Johann Tetzel at the Tetzelstein (stamp station 26). The eponymous historic forest inn invites you to take a break before the last descent.
The final stage leads via the Hagen way and the Küblinger Trift with a magnificent view of the Harz foothills back to the starting point of the tour in Schöppenstedt.
