Humpolec? 90th kilometer of the D1, the turnoff to Pelhřimov… and Motorest Melikana. The locals would carry you out in their teeth. Oh, and Hliník too, he moved to Humpolec! That's a bit better. Humpolec is a true tourist center in the middle of Vysočina. There you will find 5 museums right away – Dr. Aleš Hrdlička with his travel exhibits, the Weights Museum, the Beekeeping Open-Air Museum, the 8mička and the playful Hliníkárium in memory of “Hliník” from the film Marečku, podejte mi pero! The new feature is the establishment of a skanzen in the historic Zichpil district combining Jewish and Protestant history of the town. Don't forget the viewpoint from the tower of St. Nicholas Church and, a bit above the town, the romantic ruins of Orlík Castle with a tower rebuilt as a lookout. And of course Bernard, the famous Humpolec brewery. In the vicinity of the town, a mosaic of modern times intertwines with long history, where a fast highway slowly twists beside a local railway line. The luxurious Chateau Herálec and the romantically secluded Lower Mill of blacksmith Habermann, the children's playground of the western town Stonetown next to the castle in Úsobí, the playful railway museum and quiet forest springs. So hop on!

We can symbolically start the Humpolec trip at Horní Square. With a view from the tower of St. Nicholas Church, or conversely visit the information center and museum of the famous Humpolec transplant Hliník – Hliníkárium. Warmed up with a piece of understanding the soul of Humpolec, we head down Hradská street towards Orlík Castle. We will pass the Jewish cemetery and avoid the busy road No. 34 by taking a field path and a small road through the Rozkoš district to the parking lot under the castle. It is possible to climb to the castle via an asphalt road and from the tower rebuilt as a lookout to overlook the town. After returning to Rozkoš, carefully cross the main road and take side roads towards Vilémov and Plačkov. The winding railway track will accompany us through the first half of the trip. Just after the first crossing over it, the western town Stonetown will welcome us 200m to the right of the road. From the western town we continue on an asphalt road to Kamenice, where it is impossible not to notice a small railway museum, where the owner turned his garden into it. From the museum to modern romance, a few kilometers further by the gates of the famous Chateau Herálec, an ancient castle transformed into a luxury hotel. After Herálec, on the road towards Brod, we reach shady forest corners and turn right on beautiful forest asphalt roads to the land of streams and small mills. The yellow tourist marking passes Pejchal's mill and leads us to Dobrohostov. Here we leave the “railway wander” area and the “mountain” part of the trip opens before us. After the village, those interested can descend by a new asphalt road into the valley of the Úsobí stream, where there is a fairytale pilgrimage site – the chapel of St. Anne with a miraculous spring, refreshing both body and soul. Then we continue through Chválkov to Úsobí, where a newly renovated castle greets us right on the outskirts, reopening to the public. Above the center of the village stands the red facade of the ancient church of St. Peter and Paul. Behind Úsobí the landscape rises to Větrný Jeníkov, which we can reach either through Skorkov with an old water tower from 1912 and Zbinohy, or through forest areas and a tunnel under the highway near exit 104, the highest point of the D1 and our route as well. The municipal office of Jeníkov has a truly monumental town hall, as it is the local castle that serves this purpose, thus “officially” accessible to the public. The unique collection of the town’s history can be found in the church tower: again created – as is typical for this region – thanks to the enthusiasm of a local collector. Similarly, the owner of the nearby Lower Mill, the artistic blacksmith Habermann, handled the reconstruction of his mill sensitively, putting it back into operation in its original condition, although it is now mainly used as a smithy. The Lower Mill can be found off the roads south of the Mlýnský pond. We end our visit in the windy heights of Vysočina by riding through forests back towards Humpolec. Now the direction will be marked by the green tourist sign – on the road through Velešov and a forest asphalt road, and later a path through Mikulášov and another 3 km of busy riding on asphalt beside the D1, buffered by beautiful forests. We enter the town via the Jihlava road, which leads us directly to the Zichpil open-air museum. And that will be a beautiful final touch to exploring the landscape of the Humpolec region.
