Nový evangelický kostel v Humpolci postavili v polovině 19. století jako náhradu za toleranční kostel, který stál v tehdejší židovské čtvrti.

Většina evangelíků bydlela v Humpolci na druhé straně města od tehdejšího tolerančního kostela. Proto postupem času vystavěli ve své čtvrti školu, faru a také nový kostel.

Základ položili v letech 1861, v době kdy původní kostel přestal kapacitně stačit. Plány zformuloval stavitel J. Martin a stavba byla financována především z veřejných sbírek a darů z protestantských zemí. O rok později byl kostel vysvěcen a později k němu byla přistavěna novorenesanční věž, která byla dostavěna až v roce 1891. Měří 36 metrů.
