The Glan-Blies cycle route, also rideable as a stage route, runs for about 130 km through the beautiful river landscapes of the Glan and Blies. From Sarreguemines in Lorraine, it goes upstream along the Blies to the Glan until its confluence with the Nahe. Three countries practically say “Hello!” to you. Starting in France, it passes through the Bliesgau Biosphere Reserve in Saarland, then continues through scenic landscapes and towns in Rhineland-Palatinate. Mostly following former railway lines, the Glan-Blies cycle route offers every cyclist a carefree cycling pleasure and has been awarded four stars by the ADFC for years.
Typical for the Glan-Blies cycle route are the varied landscapes along the two rivers Glan and Blies. They characterize the cross-border Glan-Blies cycle route, which winds predominantly flat and mostly traffic-free from Lorraine’s Sarreguemines in France through the Bliesgau Biosphere Reserve in Saarland to Staudernheim in the North Palatinate. Over about 130 kilometers you enjoy idyllic river landscapes and occasionally encounter magnificent storks. Following the footsteps of the Romans who once settled here, you experience the contemplative atmosphere of the Blies and Glan valleys. Countless churches and castles, small old towns, and exciting industrial monuments ensure cultural variety, while you can challenge yourself sportily from time to time on a canoe or draisine ride. Five short stages on the ADFC quality route awarded with four stars provide enough time to enjoy and extensively explore the beautiful area around the Glan-Blies cycle route.
Large parts of the route run along the track of the former Glantal railway and also the former Bliestal railway, which have been developed into cycle paths that are not only mostly flat but also almost traffic-free. As a result, the route is not only particularly enjoyable but also ideal for occasional cyclists and families with children.
Start and finish of the route are well connected to the rail network. Those who drive to the starting point by car can pick it up again at the end of the route with the help of the train. However, you should note that not all stage destinations are connected to a train station. For those wishing to cycle only parts of the route or to break off en route, in addition to the start and finish (Sarreguemines/F and Bad Sobernheim), the train stations Blieskastel, Homburg, and Glan-Münchweiler are suitable.
Author’s recommendation
There are dining options in Sarreguemines as well as along the route in the Bliesgau Biosphere Reserve between Reinheim and Homburg. The town centers of Blieskastel and Homburg also offer some places to stop for a meal. Neighbors in Rhineland-Palatinate attract visitors with businesses in Waldmohr and Schönenberg-Kübelberg extending to Ulmet, Meisenheim, and Staudernheim.
Various accommodations can be found along the route for overnight stays. Thus, nothing stands in the way of a varied tour.

Route progression:
Start at the train station in Sarreguemines heading towards Blieskastel (1st stage approx. 36 km) – through the town of Sarreguemines to the border and onwards to the European Culture Park Bliesbruck-Reinheim – continuing along the Blies through Gersheim and past Herbitzheim to the baroque town of Blieskastel –
from Blieskastel towards Schönenberg-Kübelberg (2nd stage approx. 33 km) – on the former railway track to Homburg and further into Rhineland-Palatinate through Waldmohr to Schönenberg-Kübelberg –
from Ohmbachsee towards Ulmet (3rd stage approx. 29 km) – from here follow the Glan river along the track of the former Glantal railway to Altenglan, where a draisine ride can be planned – continuing to Ulmet –
from Ulmet towards Meisenheim (4th stage approx. 28 km) - past the St. Julian oil mill continuing to Offenbach and Lauterecken to Veldenz Castle – on to Meisenheim with its charming alleys in the historic old town –
from Meisenheim to Staudernheim (5th stage approx. 14 km) – the last short stage leads from Meisenheim through the Nahe wine region past Odernheim to Staudernheim, where the Glan-Blies cycle route ends – a detour to Bad Sobernheim is always worthwhile and extends the last stage a bit.

Public transport
The Glan-Blies route is ideal for arriving by train and bus or for using public transportation for the return transfer after a stage.
At the southern end/start point in Sarreguemines, there is an hourly connection via the Saarbahn line S1 from Lebach or Saarbrücken. At Homburg main station, there is also a connection to regional trains coming from Neunkirchen/St. Wendel as well as from Saarbrücken, Kaiserslautern/Mannheim. Along the Glan-Blies route between Sarreguemines and Homburg, the daily and hourly operating “Biosphere Bus” line 501 runs predominantly parallel to the cycle route, allowing flexible boarding and exiting.
Between Homburg and Staudernheim, there are additional train connections towards Kaiserslautern via regional trains RB 66 and RB 67. The northern end/start point of the Glan-Blies route is accessible via train lines RE3 (Saarbrücken-Frankfurt) and RB 33 (Mainz-Idar-Oberstein) and RB 34 (Baumholder-Bad Kreuznach).
Bike transport on buses and trains is free within SaarVV on weekdays from 9:00 a.m. and all weekend. Bikes can only be taken if there is sufficient space capacity.
Parking
The free parking at the train station in Sarreguemines offers an optimal start to the tour. If you want to cycle from Reinheim or Blieskastel, the free parking lots at the European Culture Park, Florianstraße in Blieskastel, and at Lautzkircher train station are ideal.
If you want to start from Staudernheim, the parking lot at the station is suitable for parking.
