From the German Wine Route to the Rhine, the route leads through vineyards, fields, and meadows as well as romantic villages with historic half-timbered houses.
From Pleisweiler-Oberhofen on the German Wine Route, the route goes through still somewhat hilly vineyards down into the Rhine plain. Behind Steinweiler, you slowly leave the wine-growing area, and vegetable fields and orchards dominate the landscape. The route continues through Germany's largest tobacco-growing region at Hatzenbühl. In summer (depending on the weather, in July/August), you can see the tobacco fields in bloom here. In Rheinzabern, the Terra Sigillata Museum invites you to visit – once one of the most important ceramic production centers in the Roman Empire. At the end of the cycling path, you pass through the tranquil town of Neupotz, which offers a wide gastronomic selection. Along the old Rhine arm through the Rhine floodplain landscape, the route finally leads towards the Rhine. The very flat terrain makes the cycling path especially family-friendly. The route mostly runs on paved agricultural or cycle paths. Only small sections are unpaved but easy to ride.
WATCH OUT! – Campaign for considerate coexistence in nature
- Be considerate on the way – Always behave with foresight, friendliness, and consideration towards everyone you meet. This is especially true on agricultural paths, where winegrowers, farmers, and foresters also work on weekends.
- Picnic & trash – Bring a trash bag for the way and take your waste back home. Use only furnished rest areas for breaks and picnics.
- Nature conservation – Stay on designated paths and avoid unnecessary noise when in nature. Leave the forest by dusk at the latest to not disturb the rhythm of nocturnal animals.

Safety information
Cycling on agricultural paths – Our cycling routes often run along paths shared with others. Therefore, we ask for considerate and friendly behavior at all times. Winegrowers, farmers, and foresters use these agricultural paths through fields, forests, and vineyards for their daily work – also on weekends. Due to work operations and/or weather conditions, the paths can be temporarily very dirty. Special care is also required when crossing roads in and around Palatinate villages. Road closures and detours must be strictly observed.
Hazard situations – In case of an emergency, quick help is essential. Although mobile phones can send GPS signals, at the classic rescue points help usually arrives fastest. These are located in places easily accessible by rescue vehicles. Remember the points with green signs and a white cross. In an emergency, return to these points and provide the number on the sign when calling for help. That way, rescue personnel know where to find you.

Roadbook
The route starts in the picturesque winegrower village of Pleisweiler-Oberhofen and leads through the vineyards along the wonderfully fragrant rose garden to Kapellen-Drusweiler. Passing wide fields and lush meadows, you cycle through the romantic villages of Oberhausen and Barbelroth to Winden. Enchanted corners and historic half-timbered houses invite you to linger. Then continue to Steinweiler. In the old town center, you can experience Palatinate hospitality with a fine glass of wine in the beautiful vintners' courtyards.
Along vegetable fields, you cycle through the small village of Erlenbach and further to the tranquil tobacco village of Hatzenbühl. On the tobacco circular route, you learn much about the tobacco growing season over a length of 2 km, starting at the parsonage garden. Passing countless historic tobacco sheds, the route continues to Rheinzabern. In the town center, a detour to the Terra Sigillata Museum is worthwhile. Embark on an exciting journey through the Roman past of the region and dive into the everyday culture of the Romans. The modern museum vividly tells the story of the settlement Tabernae, known as the "Meissen of Antiquity," and its development into one of the largest Terra Sigillata manufactories of the Roman Empire. Detail-accurate replicas of the red-glossy Terra Sigillata pottery give a sense of the Romans' table and dining culture. The original ancient kilns will particularly amaze you!
Now cycle the last stretch of the path through the Rhine floodplains to Neupotz. Enjoy this unique natural spectacle! Primeval forest-like landscapes, picturesque old Rhine arms, and secluded lakes characterize the nature along the Rhine. Shortly, you have the opportunity to gastronomically explore the Neupotz culinary mile. Especially the local zander, which feels very comfortable in the waters of the Rhine, has been increasingly served in recent years because of its tasty meat. It is a gourmet delight both fried and roasted in an aromatic Pinot Blanc sauce! An interesting detour is a visit to "Haus Leben am Strom," where you can learn vividly about life on the Rhine and flood protection. On a trip with the Roman ship Lusoria Rhenana on the Neupotz Setzfeldsee, Roman history comes alive.
